The cold finish on the GFS - coupled with a couple of chilly nights to kick off this coming week - proves enough to totally wipe out the positive anomaly in the CET by month's end based on my estimate. Imagine that!

A finish between 9.0*C and 9.5*C seems a good bet at the moment.

It looks like it's probably reached its peak and should steady off from today, although overnight temps were fairly mild.

If the models carry on as they are, they'll cause us some headaches for the May competition, although I can never bring myself to have confidence in them beyond 5 days.  I just think weather is affected by more variables than are input to models, so we don't quite get it right and the few times when they are right with longer range, is more down to luck.  More often than not, the output tempers within my five day confidence slot but I may eat my words in a couple of weeks.

Looks like the CET is going to take a fair bit of a fall till the end of month, a final value around 8.9C would be my guess.

My CET estimate is currently running about 0.3C below that of Hadley so we may see a reasonably significant downward adjustment this month due to the chilly nights.

What has made this month feel pleasantly warm is the significant amount of sunshine and very warm daytime temperatures. The Hadley maximum CET is currently running 3.2C above the 1961-1990 mean whereas the minimum is only 0.9C above the long run mean.

I am currently estimating the CET to finish close to exactly 9C.

I don't know about other areas but last night was mild here and today has been warm and sunny, so our local mean won't have fallen and although it feels like the CET should be higher because of the high daytime temps, we've had a lot of frosts at night that would bring down the daily mean.

I still think we'll finish the month at 9.2c.
