This frigid period reminds me of why I hate cricket, having been forced to play it at school we had to stand out in a field for an hour and more on a cliff top school field near Whitby with a stiff wind from the sea at 6 or 7 C -  it was supposed to be summer because it was May.
Alternative for that games period was swimming - in an unheated outdoor pool (they've filled it in since)
