This station is showing 39C

http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=INORTHOL2

I know I know, but the main point is the temp rapidly rose a few mins ago, if this is mirrored by the northolt station we could get 37C.

I'm still not sure how accurate this local weather station of ours is but it showed 32.4c at 15.20. Which, if correct, mirrors just over 90f.
Currently its showing 31.4c which I find surprising as we have had cloud cover on and off this afternoon.

Well I would point out that this is a result of high uppers and mainly strong sunshine. This point was made the other day in response to people who doubted we would get to 32'c despite +20'c 850 hPa air aloft. Lesson learned I hope.
Meanwhile I'll be celebrating with some Westons Cider and a kebab shortly :)

Thicknesses were never really discussed on this forum but 575dam air here in the SE is off the scale for SE England. Our usual annual peak sits between 566-569dam air normally..again, today we were on a different pitch.

Wasn't the August 2003 record actually broken quite later in the afternoon, around 6pm? I might have this completely wrong.

Absolutely cracking the flags in edinburgh at a staggering 16.6c at 4pm

Only about 8c lower than the metoffice was predicting at 3pm... where do I go for a refund?

Thanks for all the reports, fascinating reading on this historic day.
i am very jealous from Kephalonia where it is about 24c after recent thunderstorm.

What makes it even more frustrating is that the north is in on the action unlike the record breaking day in 2003. It could be the warmest day in West Yorkshire since 1990 but hard to tell with all the weather station closures and knowledge of where the cloud is. Bingley at 267m asl reached at least 30.6c probably higher. Cant wait to check my sensor.

1) Airmass temperature

2) Wind speed (stagnation potential)

3) Moisture inc cloud cover

Today only 1) was exceptional, in fact the other two factors worked against us. Had they been working with us then I'm sure we could have seen 40C like the NAVGEM predicted (I also want to point out the NAVGEM 12Z yesterday actually was the closest!).

I think the main reason we saw such high temps today was the wind direction, unusually the absolute shortest possible track was taken, and this coupled with a warm continent gave a fairly high lapse rate (20C at 850hpa to 36C at 1010hpa)

2023/2024 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):
29/11 (-6), 30/11 (-6), 02/12 (-5), 03/12 (-5), 04/12 (-3), 16/01 (-3), 18/01 (-8), 08/02 (-5)

Total: 8 days with snow/sleet falling.

2022/2023 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):

18/12 (-1), 06/03 (-6), 08/03 (-8), 09/03 (-6), 10/03 (-8), 11/03 (-5), 14/03 (-6)

Total: 7 days with snow/sleet falling.

2021/2022 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):

26/11 (-5), 27/11 (-7), 28/11 (-6), 02/12 (-6), 06/01 (-5), 07/01 (-6), 06/02 (-5), 19/02 (-5), 24/02 (-7), 30/03 (-7), 31/03 (-8), 01/04 (-8)

On topic..days like today reinforce my believe that 40c (104f) is easily achievable in the UK if all the parameters come together.

Still 34*C here in Menorca at 6:21pm local time.

Bonkers to be comparing obs for here with those for the SE and seeing them being trumped!

Even the 'desert' NW of the island tends to top out at no more than 38*C when the 850's are in the 20's as they are now. Though 40*C is not unheard of later on on July.

I wonder how tomorrow will turn out in the UK... freshening up from the west but soon enough to avoid another unusually hot start for the SE...?

Then there's the possible return of the heat through Friday. If that goes anything like Tuesday did then 30*C will be seen again ahead of incoming cloud that evening.

Think record in the centre was 34.4c in 1990.  Given your reading perhaps 33c in the centre, same as Doncaster and Sheffield.
