Such extreme heat so early in the season has serious implications for the remainder of the summer; the roasting conditions across NW Europe will need a big push from the Atlantic to clear away, and that's rare in most summers for anywhere south of the UK.

So the heat just sits around and under the strong July sun doesn't relax much, if at all. It can even intensify further. I wouldn't want to be living in souther France right now, for example!

Potentially, by early August the heat could be beyond all comprehension... It depends how soon propet, sustained mobility returns to the Atlantic/Europe sector.

We see little sign of that in current model output, and some long range models keep the mid-Atlantic trough quasi-permanent for most of the month. No surprise to see the GFS 12z toying with another round of heat for the UK starting later next week. In fact the jet seems to go AWOL by day 9.

Bottom line, we need to watch the Atlantic jet and corresponding movement of the the Euro heat very closely this month.

You just never know with the fickle thing that is the UK Summer...  However, as I've been saying for a while we certainly ***ARE* due a hot August!

Crazy that its still 32c at 20.20at London City Airport. That would be a warm evening even somewhere like Kuala Lumpur.

I've been in Canterbury all day, planning response teams to help with operation stack. We're in a non air-conditioned building, on the top floor....and the nearest station I can find, reported a max of 36.1C! :-O

Edit: And looking at my local station here on Planet Thanet, it was brass monkeys at just 30.8C max :-D

Can you believe Nottingham was 34 C today and still 32 C at 7pm. Not sure what the accurate temperature was? Reached 34.7 3/8/90 when I lived there so could be Notts 2nd highest ever?
Edinburgh reached 18 C and was dull with NE wind!! Thankfully I'm in the Borders 50 miles to the SE and experienced 28 C.

Apparently Brogdale (Faversham) reached 37.5c - though whether it should be counted is a moot point!

This is the website of the site quoted above http://www.favershamweather.org/

The official Brogdale site does appear on the Met Office WOW site - see link below. However, it only reports a reading at 09z each day which is not very helpful. This morning at 9z the reading was 29.6C compared to 32.5C at Heathrow. So I rather doubt Brogdale got anywhere near the Heathrow maximum.

What a superb evening and night. Had first BBQ of the year and it was still sweltering. Then the cloud disappeared and the sun came back out around 8.30pm.

Still 27C and very sultry. Perfect timing at work as the aircon has failed tonight.

Still around 23c here, full moon, fantastic swim in the pool which is at a stunning 28.5C.  Happy days of summer.  Enjoyed a pint or two with Gusty earlier.  Great end to an historic day.

If we get a lot of cloud (from for example dry storms) that will be a good way to keep the temperature up.

23.8C to beat the all time record

23.1C to beat the July record.

This heatwave will be remember of What if the clouds didn't come and how high the temps will reach? This will play in my mind as we waited 9 years to get this heat in July and how long we are going to wait again to have another attempt without clouds around?  Good experience to come out at work on break time to feel the 36C heat at 5pm so I won't forget.  Then a record 29C at 9pm from my car thermo when I finished work.  HIghest was 27C on 1st August 2013 when 35C was reached here.
