Thanks Simon. Well Leeds Bradford with its cold bias has reached a perhaps unheard of rounded 30c at 17.20. Can't see a 30c in the historic records.  Leeds weather station could be 2-5c warmer than the airport under sunny conditions . Think record in the centre was 34.4c in 1990.  Given your reading perhaps 33c in the centre, same as Doncaster and Sheffield.

Shame we'll never know - even Church Fenton would have been a good second best. Thanks a lot, Met Office.

Heathrow topping out almost as predictable as night following day.

We got to 31.6c here and noticably more humid today. Wonderful weather, just not for long enough.

And now, like clockwork, the easterly wind has kicked in and the temperature is falling fast - down to 29.1C. Easterly winds are probably the most useless thing ever outside of winter (and even then they're usually crap).

Such extreme heat so early in the season has serious implications for the remainder of the summer; the roasting conditions across NW Europe will need a big push from the Atlantic to clear away, and that's rare in most summers for anywhere south of the UK.

So the heat just sits around and under the strong July sun doesn't relax much, if at all. It can even intensify further. I wouldn't want to be living in souther France right now, for example!

Potentially, by early August the heat could be beyond all comprehension... It depends how soon propet, sustained mobility returns to the Atlantic/Europe sector.

We see little sign of that in current model output, and some long range models keep the mid-Atlantic trough quasi-permanent for most of the month. No surprise to see the GFS 12z toying with another round of heat for the UK starting later next week. In fact the jet seems to go AWOL by day 9.

Bottom line, we need to watch the Atlantic jet and corresponding movement of the the Euro heat very closely this month.

Still 30.8 C despite the increased cloud cover thus making for a close and sultry evening. I can take or leave the heat if it needs be but my elderly mother is struggling now. I am keeping her going with water and fans but it's not an ideal situation to be honest, so if you don't mind I'd like to have my normal freshness back, please?

Max of 28.9C here and that was as early 12.53, then it clouded over and it dropped back a degree or so. By mid afternoon quite sunny again and the temperature responded but didn't quite match that.

Now 27.7C and it's sweltering upstairs at the moment, the wind has dropped and even with all the windows open there's little or no breeze coming through.

Excellent, so we just had the second hottest day on record in the UK.

Imagine what would have happened with a. cloudless conditions from dawn to dusk, b. the 26C uppers NAVGEM was showing us a week ago.

Temperature reached 32 degrees today and that was with a couple of hours of cloud a midday.

The wind was really quite strong earlier but was so hot it did not cool you in the slightest.

It went cloudy a few hours ago but the temps were still 30c earlier this evening. Brighter now and the temperature is still 28c which is amazing for here.
