A nice little storm passed through Central London around midnight, lots of lightning but not a great deal of rain, and certainly no hail.


I am home now and its quite a murky night, the storms have cleared leaving the temperature at 17.7°c, and the humidity at 96%.

Great lightning show from west here in Stoke but that big cell weakened a tad as it approached and has now intensfied again. We had about 5 mins of constant lightning and thunder but it could have been SO much better.

Uttoexeter got slammed again like last July.

Fascinating to see what happens to storms approaching York - here we have east wind and sea fog at 12C - will it kill them off?

Well that was impressive. Almost an hour of fairly continuous flickering lightning and booming thunder, with intermittent bouts of torrential rain. It has now moved off to the north.


The most intense action appeared to be to my west, and most of the lightning appeared to be deep in the clouds so I didn't see that many naked sparks, but maybe I'm being picky.

Just dying down here in Sheffield. About 4 strikes per minute visible now. Rain not as heavy as the radar would suggest, only a short period of torrential. As Robn says, most activity up in the cloud so no actual sparks seen as yet but it's still going on so there's hope yet...

Still getting lightning crawling across the sky into Glossop from the stuff over Holmefirth way.

About 3 or 4 intense long lasting flashes per minute at the moment. What a week this has been.

Worst storm here that I have seen in 10 years at least , lighning every 2 seconds , thunder is shaken the house , frequent power cuts , o and by the way this was forcast to miss us and pass well to the west of here

What a fantastic night! Just like summer storms should be. Loads of lightning, but all in the clouds rather than cloud-to-ground.

Well, it did lose some of its oomph by the time it reached here - definitely not constant lightning - but still frequent at around every 7 seconds, very bright too, with loud thunder and 16mm of rain. Saw some CG strikes too.

All in all, very good. Waited long enough.

Morning all. Well that was quite a night wasn't it? Almost the perfect storms. Spectacularly angry light shows with tropical rain intensities at their core, but moving through obligingly quickly so you could get some sleep, and widespread so most of us it seems could join the party. Happy weather bunny this morning as another hot and steamy day dawns here 🙂

We were in a gap between the storms here in Folkestone but it didn't stop me viewing some spectacular lightning all points west, east and north of here. I decided to go and chase the East Kent storm at 23.10hrs and got close to it at St. Margarets at Cliffe at 23.35hrs. What was interesting was an area of road for about 500 metres in St Margarets that was steaming, suggesting a recent fall of hail in that particular area.


The most notable thing for me was the temperature rise at the peak of the plume at 1am afterthe storms moved through. The temperature climbed to 24.6c at one point with a dewpoint briefly of 19.6c !

Same here in Slough area missed out the fun only on the edge of it but West Ewell got a hit last night when white echo went over it.   The storms I saw in Chicago still surpass what I saw last night.

The uppers had reached 19C at it peak and today if conditions does met well I would hope to see at least over 30C by the afternoon.

It should be noted that NWx and some other forecasters saw the risk in the SE last night where some ppn models (Euro4 and WRF) and broadcast agencies failed. The BBC did not include the SE in storm risk.
