I'm guessing that the temperatures were massively suppressed in Death Valley as a result of high relative humidity caused by a very damp environment rather than anything relating to airmass or cloud / sunshine amounts.

Global warming, as the TWOs resident historian, can you tell us exactly how unusual a nation wide sub 20C day is for the last week of July?

I can't see it being a record breaking cold day now as temps have climbed to 18C, and dew points up to 16C.

18C is still very poor for this time of year.

Managed 19C here today.

Clouds are back threatening rain, I suspect 20C west of here would have been possible as the air behind the rain was much warmer.

So if we went 10c below average across southern England in January, would give us maximum's of around -7c?

1 July 2012 - highest temperature 19.3C Heathrow

10 July 2012 - highest temperature 19.6C Manston and Brize Norton

14 July 2012 - highest temperature 19.1C Pershore College

2 July 2013 - highest temperature 18.5C Weybourne

20 July 2011 - highest temperature 19.4C Marham

Delving way back into the archives I had a look at 1919 which has been mentioned in another thread. In the 24 hours to 7h on 29 July 1919 the temperature failed to reach 70F anywhere in the UK (temperatures in those days were always measured in F). The highest reading I can find was 69F at Bude so it did just exceed 20C here but nowhere else. Next highest was 67F at Penzance. Interestingly the temperature in London that day did not exceed 61F (Camden Sq).

The latter seems unlikely given the data you quote are published on the Met Office website around midnight each day and only run from 09z to 21z and not the full 24 hours.
