I hope Mods don't mind, but it would be nice to have a thread dedicated to this weekend's short and sharp cold snap.

What is quite amazing is that locally we haven't had an air frost all season yet... weeks later than the norm. Now it looks like an air frost and possibly the first flakes could arrive around the same time!

Expect a cold, crisp weekend, with possibly a snowy surprise for some.

After the very mild start to November, the next few days are going to be a bit of a shock:

Very good idea Twister and this will keep the MOD thread flowing better so the " will it snow "questions can go in here rather than in MO

I think the biggest issue for around here is a strong gale force northerly wind (40 mph sustained with up to 70 mph gust) on Saturday morning. Those living along the North Kent coast and at the Thanet area are going to feel the effects of that. When coupled with temperatures hovering just above freezing, that's going to make for quite a brutal wind chill.
Any sleetiness that does come out of it provided any precipitation does make it through here pales into insignificance when set against this wind,  perhaps it's just as well that it is coinciding with a retreating neap tide.

That "Polar Low" type wobble for the irish sea on Sunday night has all but disapeare - despite several runs increasing its intensity. All focus seems to now be on Saturday night - that LP seems to be intensifying into quite a little system!

Well , well, after some chances for some to see some snow falling this weekend, UKMO has another go:

Eur4 update looks alot less snowy. Now appears to be very messy wintry mix tomorrow night. I reckon it will be rain with a bit of snow mixed in for some.

Windy and wet and very very cold for all.

A few days ago Met Office were forecasting quite extended periods of "heavy snow" with us, together with enough of a wind to be of concern. Hopefully it's another episode like so many last year, when sometimes up to 40 hours of their "heavy snow" amounted to no more than a dusting. I don't know what others think, but it seems the Met now thinks their role is to forecast the worst possible outcome, no matter how unlikely. Thankfully other forecasts like TWO and XCweather are to hand to give a second opinion.

It does look rather marginal for most at a glance based on this evening's outcome. What looked "nailed on" for snow here a day or so ago looks very iffy as the precipitation that goes through is not really associated with cold enough air. It could be wet and very windy for a time then cold with a few flurries possible. Inland in the hills here it could be a much more wintry picture!

I think Essex is going to get a quick passing band of snow over the weekend but nothing to get to excited about but at least its a early winter teaser

We actually had a period of rather wet snow in the middle of a spell of rain earlier his afternoon. I wasn't expecting anything wintry until later is evening (if at all) so it was a nice surprise. Nothing settled of course as the snow and ground were both rather wet.

Met office  computer generated goes for a spell of heavy snow here tonight before the rain and mild sector arrives. Think its very unlikely we will see anything lying, but further north or hills in the west could do better.

Currently 2.8c and clear
