This was a very mild December with a CET of 7.3, not as mild December 1988 (7.5) but up to the 19th, it was exceptionally mild as can be seen with the CET trackometer

The current weather pattern reminds me more of what happened in 1898-99 than 1997-98.

Wasn't there a strong El Niño in 1898-99? November 1898 was very mild until about the 20th then there was a cold snap not unlike what happen last November but a bit more potent and longer lasting. By December 1898, it became very mild again. The next two winter months were not as mild and the spring was on the cool side.

Now that sounds like my sort of month!

Always amazing how those model reanalyses can create familiar looking 850Hpa maps from over 100 years ago. I know they're obviously based on far fewer readings and a lot of interpolation, but it's still a wonderful resource to be able to look at a day in 1898 as if it were on today's GFS output.

The strong El Nino came a year later in 1899, and a very good winter followed. The El Nino of 1918 was also followed by a good winter so a strong El Nino may not all be that bad... other winters were poor though.
