There is now a red warning for imminent flooding in Lancashire:

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings/#?tab=map&map=Warnings&zoom=5&lon=-3.50&lat=55.50&fcTime=1451088000

Caused by trailing stalling front along the boundary between very mild Tm air and colder pM air.

Perhaps we can keep track of this appalling situation here?

A res alert for rain is a rare and very alarming forecast element... Thoughts are with those at the mercy of the floods today, not just in Lancs but the likes of Cumbria as well.

Awful morning here. Rain seems to be oscillating between steady and torrential. I'm near the southern boundary of rain band. Doesn't look good for those more centrally place in rain band.

A quick scan of ppn maps and to me the Ribble catchment looks likely to catch a huge amount of rain today. Communities along the Ribble likely to be under water soon.

The environment agency are reporting most of the rivers and becks here just over the border in west Yorkshire are now very close to, or in some case over, record levels.

It's appalling here but luckily we live 120m above sea level but our neighbours, friends aren't so lucky.

The NW/SE split has been staggering this year. Down here in Hampshire my father-in-law (head of the local fishing club) is bemoaning the continued low water levels in the chalk streams.

The Ouse is rising nicely!

That river seems to be in a semi state of permanent flood for several weeks now.

River levels at this station on the Aire in W Leeds have surpassed the highest level recorded(not sure when the records began) Sure it is the case for many other rivers across the North.

It's a bog-standard flood at the moment that we'd get a few ties each year, but the persistence of the high water levels has been more unusual. We'll see what happens when the Swale and Ure catchments feed down into the system, but currently at 3.5m and climbing:

If it gets toward 5m then some defences will certainly come under pressure.
