Ive always said - so long as somewhere in the UK is getting snow, which we can track - see fall, and see photos - thats always more interesting than wave after wave of mild wet weather.

If it snows IMBY - then thats just the cherry on top. Last year wasnt great for snow, but seeing sheffield and parts of the peak district get heavy falls took the edge off it, and allowed my brain to believe it was in winter. Fortunatley we got a surprise snowfall on the boxing day. Which was 1 snowfall more than most got last year

2013 wasnt great for snow totals IMBY, but it was great for days when it actually snowed. Infact in that term it was probably the snowiest winter ive ever experienced. But the snow was always on a knife edge meaning what did fall was failry wet, and the ground never that cold. So it was a grey/brown winter rather than solid white. Never one to take something for granted though - that was a winter not to forget.

Luckily where i live we can tap into a few different environments... from the lowland interior of cheshire, to the highland of wales and the interior there too. But we can always be ready for a northerly and northwesterly. This means in a lot of weather setups - i can access a snowy landscape within about 45 mins drive if my current situation is snowless (which being on a peninsula in the gulf stream is most often the case)

I know that there are signs things might be changing, but I'm so bored with this winter so far... Just want a bit of interest that's not yet another storm.

Can't help thinking that whoever chose to name storms has caused this. (I know that this is superstitious nonsense but...)

Horrendous weather day at work today in Grenoside, Sheffield. Persistent fog, drizzle and dreary dullness all day

The sooner some cold weather comes along to clear the air the better!

I see, as of 6pm Aboyne has had 104mm of rain or over 150% of the monthly average and it is the 4th day of the month. Both astonishing and worrying.

The sun actually came up this morning but didn't stay for long before the default grey and damp returned, with mist.  It's not so much the lack of snow and frost that's bothering me, it's the eternal grey, damp, dreary, almost daylight days.

Seems like another shot at decent winter weather has been whipped away from us.

-34C in northern Sweden. And, as per usual, a huge temperature contrast, with the cold barely getting beyond eastern Germany.

is the cold snap promised for next week by the BBC weather team and others now completely off and continuing with the mild wet dross we are currently experiencing?

according to Roger 63 and The Beast on the model output discussion forum page tonight's ECM latest implies the cold spell is over before it starts or words to that effect...I don't know what to believe anymore

Oops -sorry-wrong thread- oh, this weather is pewtrick and foul; oh, I'm sick of it and I'm going to emigrate (as soon as I can drag my ** off a social networking site and do some work to pay for the flight).

I just said in the MO thread that I think this winter has a 2012/13 feel to it, and cold spells will be relatively brief, but with a few 'surprise' snowfall events (away from the south)

Although I remember not being that enamoured with the 2012/13 winter at the time (still spoilt after 2009/10 & 2010/11 winters), I'd happily take a repeat.

This is the moaning thread so....

I know we live in a maritime climate, the Gulf Stream  and all that, but SHOULD the ECM for example verify which looks most likely IMO... is a 2 day cold snap with a frost or two and a few sleety showers really the best we are allowed to hope for in the 12 weeks of winter for a country on the same latitude as Canada. We've had one covering of snow in the past 5 years. I think Cairo and Jerusalem have seen more snow than I have the past few years. We should for grateful for anything we get yes but this country does frustrate me sometimes.

Let's hope we finally get some luck because I really don't fancy yet snowless year.

Personally I would delighted if the ECM 12z op run verified - average or maybe even cool temperatures, a chance of some wintry precipitation at times but so much more importantly, drier. It has literally rained all this year in NE Scotland, flooding and damage have been widespread, it has yet to get fully light this year and the wind has, until this afternoon, been incessant. There are a few more days of this to come so any change be it cold and snowy or not is welcome. Vile does not begin to describe it.

So far in the first 5 days of the month Aboyne has received almost 200% of the January mean rainfall and it is still raining with (quote a lot) more to come. Right now I would settle for mild, dry and bright as much as cold and snowy (but naturally would be happy with the latter!)

I think every band of rain is conspiring to soak E Scotland, even your band WI looks as if it wants to join up and visit!

Watching the MO in the run-up to a potential cold spell isn't good for one's health. We've seen output go from stellar to heartbreak within 24 hours enough times in the past to be fearful, even with cross-model agreement.

It's like watching your footy team in the most important game for years. Like it's the last game of the season; secure the 3 points and win the league. You're 2-1 up with 10 minutes to play but your key midfielder has been sent off, your commanding centre-half is limping around with an injury (but you've used all your subs) and the opposition is peppering your box with crosses & your goal with shots.

It's painful to watch, you just know it's all going to go wrong. And yet, you can't look away. You won't give up the flicker of hope that you're going to do this.

And another whinge...

With all the 'it's happening', 'no it's not', 'yes it is' too'ing & fro'ing, I've held off blurting out to friends & family that a cold spell is on the way. Now it's looking likely, it's too late because half the newspapers & the BBC forecasts are mentioning it.

I've even overheard people at work saying "going to turn freezing next week with snow".

Damn you all to hell.
