Yesterday evening saw a powerful convective squall run across the south that had everything but the kitchen sink in some locations. Whilst powerful wind gusts were a feature of this, the main event is still to arrive although buoy data to the far SW indicates some increase in the breeze in that area with gusts already pushing 80mph. It's relatively quiet and simply breezy here in Basingstoke but that may be very different in 6 hours time

Buoy 62023 which is just south of Ireland has recently recorded 97mph

What a squall late last night, it was truly immense. I think this one is ramping up today, stay safe folks.

Updated Meto warnings. Wind warnings go further north now into my area and up into West Midlands as well. Have to not to bad here just yet.

strangely MUCH windier last night than this morning??

Another example of the forecasters being caught out or over enthusiastic with the Warnings?

There is no reason to believe anyone has been 'caught out' as you say, especially as today's winds have not peaked yet.

from the BBC news front story:

The Met Office has issued an amber "be prepared" wind warning for Wales, south-west England, London and south-east England and says coastal areas could see giant waves and localised flooding.

no it hasn't... there is no amber warning in place for London.

The wind is a wee bit stronger than my earlier post but still nothing to worry about so far. I think The west coast and the Mendip hills are taking the edge off to a certain degree for this area as Gibby has mentioned.

Certainly windier generally this morning than last night here although there were some strong gusts in the squall front last night.
