Monday 7 March—Sunday 13 March
A slow change to something milder

It will be a cold and frosty start for most of the UK on Monday with the risk of a few icy stretches. Most places will remain dry with sunny spells during Monday but Northern Ireland and eastern parts of England will see more cloud with the risk of a few wintry showers. The showers will be mainly confined to coastal areas. A cold night will follow on Monday but by Tuesday morning the breeze will pick up and a weakening frontal system will spread eastwards, arriving into Northern Ireland continuing eastwards. This will fall mainly as rain but there may be a small dusting of snow over the hills across northern parts of the UK. The front will clear through during Tuesday by which time a new low pressure system will start to spin up across southern England.

This low pressure system is expected to deepen and move northwards, bringing very windy conditions, mainly to Britain as well as heavy rain; the main focus for the rain will be across eastern Scotland and eastern parts of England. This system will clear east during Wednesday night and then another system will start to work its way in from the Atlantic leaving an unsettled end to the week.

From Monday through to the end of the week there will be a gradually upward trend in temperatures meaning less widespread frosts by the end of the week as milder conditions start to filter through, initially across southern areas; colder conditions are likely to remain across the far north of the UK. Rainfall is likely to average out as near or below average and sunshine amounts are likely to be close to average.

Monday 14 March—Sunday 20 March
A sign of something more settled?

As we push into longer range forecasting we start to look for trends. We examine all the output from the main global models and we try to understand what signals we are seeing and where and how the majority of the output starts to group together. The main signals are that there will be a mixture of winds coming from the west through to the north but the majority of the time it will come from the west or northwest. This indicates that temperatures are likely to work out as around average for this time of year but perhaps slightly colder than average conditions in the far north of the UK. Above average rainfall is likely across Wales and England and perhaps slightly below across Northern Ireland and Scotland. However, there are signs at the end of the period that there will be a more settled spell. Whilst it looks to be more settled, there is a split between the models as to whether it will be cold and settled or mild and settled; this will depend on where an areas of high pressure may eventually sit.

Monday 21 March—Sunday 3 April
Looking mild and changeable

As we approach Easter weekend The main models are signally a west to southwesterly flow across the UK. This will bring mainly mild and changeable conditions with rain moving through at times and less likely to see overnight frosts. There are signals that the heaviest of the rain is likely to fall across northern while southern areas are likely to see close to or perhaps below average temperatures. However, towards the start of April, there are some general groupings of the models to indicate that that could be a more prolonged spells of dry weather; however there is a divide as to whether this will be cold and settled weather or mild and settled weather.

UK Outlook for Sunday 13 Mar 2016 to Tuesday 22 Mar 2016:

A rather cloudy day with patchy light rain for the northwest on Sunday, whilst brighter and drier conditions for parts of the southwest and possibly at times for the southeast and northeast. High pressure is then expected to dominate well into next week, to bring largely dry and settled weather, with temperatures probably above normal. Feeling rather warm and spring-like when the sun's out, but a risk of rural frost at night, and a possibility that colder conditions could extend from the east with time. Towards the end of the period there is a tendency for more unsettled conditions to gradually develop, with temperatures around normal or perhaps slightly below. Although the winds will be rather breezy at first towards the northwest, they will generally remain light or moderate throughout.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 23 Mar 2016 to Wednesday 6 Apr 2016:

This period is most likely to be dominated by rather changeable weather, with temperatures averaging out at near or slightly below the seasonal norm. There is the possibility of large swings in weather type and temperatures through the period, though confidence remains very low.

UK Outlook for Monday 14 Mar 2016 to Wednesday 23 Mar 2016:

High pressure is expected to dominate next week, bringing largely dry and settled weather with some sunshine at times for all areas. The far northwest may be the exception at first with perhaps some patchy rain or drizzle lingering, and perhaps some showery rain reaching the far south or southwest on Tuesday. It will feel rather warm and spring-like when the sun's out, however feeling on the cold side in some southeastern and central areas. Remaining on the mild side in the northwest but temperatures around normal or perhaps slightly below elsewhere with a risk of rural frost at night, especially towards the southeast. The winds will generally be light, however there may be a brisk east or northeasterly breeze developing across the south later.

UK Outlook for Thursday 24 Mar 2016 to Thursday 7 Apr 2016:

This period is most likely to be dominated by rather changeable weather, with temperatures averaging out at near or slightly below the seasonal norm. There is the possibility of large swings in weather type and temperatures through the period, though confidence remains very low.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 15 Mar 2016 to Thursday 24 Mar 2016:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather across the British Isles next week and through the following weekend. This will bring largely dry and settled conditions to all areas, with some sunshine at times. It will feel rather warm and spring-like during the afternoons when the sun is out, although it will occasionally feel cold in central and southern areas, especially in southeastern England. Remaining on the mild side in the northwest but temperatures probably around or slightly below normal elsewhere with a risk of frost and fog at night. The wind will be generally light in strength, although there is likely to be a brisk northeasterly breeze at times in the south. As we head towards late March there is a slightly higher risk of unsettled conditions developing.

UK Outlook for Friday 25 Mar 2016 to Friday 8 Apr 2016:

The period covering late March and early April is most likely to be dominated by rather changeable weather, with temperatures probably averaging out at near the seasonal average. There is the possibility of large swings in weather type and temperature through the period, which could perhaps last for a week at a time, although confidence on this currently remains very low.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 16 Mar 2016 to Friday 25 Mar 2016:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather across the British Isles for much of this period. This will bring largely dry and settled conditions to all areas. Cloud amounts will be rather variable, but there will be some decent periods of sunshine, especially in west and northwestern areas where it will feel warm and rather spring-like. Eastern areas, however, are likely to be cloudier at times and feeling a bit cooler in easterly winds. Overnight temperatures will remain on the cold side, with fairly widespread frosts and patchy fog at times. As we head towards late March there is a slightly higher risk of unsettled conditions developing, mainly in the west and southwest, with rain and strong winds possible.

UK Outlook for Saturday 26 Mar 2016 to Saturday 9 Apr 2016:

The period covering late March and early April is most likely to be dominated by rather changeable weather. A transition to more unsettled conditions is likely through the first week of this period, but this could be a slow and erratic process. Then as we move into April settled conditions could become re-established. Temperatures probably averaging out near normal for the time of year, although with changing weather types, there could be some large swings in temperature through the period, which is quite usual for early spring.

UK Outlook for Thursday 17 Mar 2016 to Saturday 26 Mar 2016:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather across the British Isles for much of this period. This will bring largely dry and settled conditions to all areas. Cloud amounts will be rather variable, but there will be some periods of sunshine, especially in west and northwestern areas where it will often feel warm and rather spring-like. Eastern and southern areas, however, are likely to be cloudier at times and feeling a bit cooler in easterly winds. Overnight temperatures will remain on the cold side, with a risk of frost and patchy fog at times. As we head towards late March there is a slightly higher risk of unsettled conditions developing, mainly in the west and northwest, with rain and strong winds possible.

UK Outlook for Sunday 27 Mar 2016 to Sunday 10 Apr 2016:

A transition to more changeable weather across all parts is expected at the end of March and the start of April. This could be a slow and erratic process, especially in the south. After this there is a fair degree of uncertainty, but more settled conditions could become re-established later in April. Some large variations in temperatures are possible from day to day, which quite often happens during early Spring.

UK Outlook for Friday 18 Mar 2016 to Sunday 27 Mar 2016:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather across the United Kingdom through this weekend and into the first half of next week. This will mean a good deal of dry and settled weather, with some sunshine at times. Temperatures are expected to be about average for the time of year, though feeling pleasantly mild when the sun's out, especially towards the west. However, where prolonged cloud breaks occur at night, then patchy fog and ground frost are likely. As we head into the Easter holiday period, a gradual transition to more unsettled and slightly colder weather looks the more likely trend, at least across northern parts, although confidence is very low at this stage.

UK Outlook for Monday 28 Mar 2016 to Monday 11 Apr 2016:

An unsettled end to March looks the most likely scenario at this stage, with temperatures slightly below average. As we head into early April, there is a very high degree of uncertainty, although there is likely to be significant swings in weather type and temperatures through the period, as often the case at this time of year.

Summary
High pressure dominating until at least Easter

March definitely came in like a lion, with some wet and windy conditions affecting many parts of the UK. Only last week a potent area of low pressure crossed southern parts of the UK, leading to some flooding across parts of the Midlands and some very strong winds across Wales and southwest England.

Over the course of the past weekend though, the weather settled down significantly, with dry conditions dominating and foggy mornings giving way to sunny afternoons. This settled weather was a result of a large anticyclone that developed to the east of the UK. At this stage it looks as if this high pressure system will continue to influence UK weather conditions through until at least the Easter weekend. There is the prospect that March will indeed go out like a lamb. That said, there are some uncertainties in regard to this theme.

Monday 14 March—Sunday 20 March
A dry start and a dry end.

The week will get underway with an anticylone centred just to the northeast or directly over the northern reaches of the UK, and the anticyclone is unlikely to move a great deal through the entire period. As a result, there will be an almost completely dry picture for the overwhelming majority of the UK through the week.

Monday will get off to a dry and partly cloudy start, with some patchy fog in places. Much of the cloud and certainly the fog will lift through the morning though, leading to a dry and bright afternoon for all. Conditions will most likely be warmest across western and northern parts of Scotland, with a slightly chilly easterly breeze across many eastern parts of the UK, particularly in the south.

Through the middle part of the week, it looks like skies will become generally cloudier. This will most likely mean there will be less overnight fog to contend with, but also that the afternoons won't be as bright, although some sunny spells will no doubt develop in places, particularly across the western fringes of the UK. Most places will stay dry throughout, but there is a risk that the cloud might just be thick enough to produce the odd spot of rain at times, most likely further towards the north.

As we head into the weekend, a similar theme will prevail, with a lot of dry weather and variable amounts of cloud.

On the whole, temperatures will be around the average for the time of year throughout the week, but some western and northern areas of the UK that are not so exposed to the generally easterly wind will become quite warm at times in any afternoon sunshine that develops.

Monday 21 March—Sunday 27 March
Mostly dry again, but signs of a change for some?

As we move through the week leading up to Easter, almost all indications from the various forecasting tools and techniques suggest a persistence of high pressure. This will likely mean another largely dry week. The main challenge of this forecast period will most likely be attempting to determine how cloudy the skies will be. Any clear spells will introduce the possibility of some slightly warmer than average conditions by day, but conversely clear overnight spells will increase the chance of some patchy early morning frost and fog. We are therefore likely to see some large diurnal temperature ranges which is of course fairly normal for this time of year here in the UK.

Moving through the Easter weekend, there are some signs that the dominance of the high pressure system might start to wane a little, particularly toward northwestern parts of the UK. This may lead to a spell of wetter and windier weather for some northwestern areas.

Monday 28 March—Sunday 10 April
An uncertain start to April

Even for the longer range, confidence in the detail of the forecast for the first few days of April is particularly low. The suite of different computer forecasting models that we employ are suggesting a relatively wide array of different solutions. At the time of writing, it is felt that as we move into April weather conditions will slowly start to become a little more unsettled, with some spells of wet and windy weather moving from the northwest. The best of any drier conditions are anticipated to be chiefly across the southeast of the UK, with temperatures falling a touch below average for the time of year. However, some models suggest that the blocked pattern of high pressure that will dominate much of the second half of March could well hang on into early April. It will be interesting to see how the forecast evolves over the coming week.

Next week

Next week we'll start firming up on some of the broader themes of the forecast for the Easter weekend, and whether or not showers will become prevalent during the first part of April. Find out all of these details next week ...

UK Outlook for Saturday 19 Mar 2016 to Monday 28 Mar 2016:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather across the United Kingdom through this weekend and into the first half of next week. This will mean a good deal of dry and settled but not always sunny weather. Although there are likely to be prolonged sunny spells for some areas, onshore winds may bring cloud inland from the coast at times with the odd spot of drizzle. Temperatures should be about average for the time of year, though feeling pleasant in the sun. However, in cloud breaks over night, then patchy fog and ground frost are likely. As we head into Easter, a gradual transition to more unsettled and slightly colder weather looks the more likely trend, at least across northern parts, although confidence is low at this stage.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 29 Mar 2016 to Tuesday 12 Apr 2016:

An unsettled end to March looks the most likely scenario at this stage, with the north and west seeing the most of any wet and windy weather and best of any dry and settled weather in the south and east. Temperatures may be generally slightly below average. Then as we head into early April, there is a very high degree of uncertainty. There may be significant swings in weather and temperatures through the period, with the possibility of unsettled weather and a prolonged drier more settled spell, as is often the case at this time of year.

UK Outlook for Monday 21 Mar 2016 to Wednesday 30 Mar 2016:

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather across the United Kingdom bringing a lot of dry weather, however there is a risk of light showers spreading southwards across the UK on Monday. A mixture of cloudier areas and some sunshine is likely, with patchy fog and ground frost possibly forming overnight. As we head into Easter, a gradual transition to more unsettled and slightly colder weather looks the more likely trend, with stronger winds and outbreaks of rain affecting the north and northeast, whilst parts of the south and southwest hold on to the driest weather for longer, although confidence is low at this stage. Temperatures should be about average or perhaps just below for the time of year, feeling rather cool in areas with an onshore brisk breeze.

UK Outlook for Thursday 31 Mar 2016 to Thursday 14 Apr 2016:

A rather unsettled end to March looks the most likely scenario at this stage, with the north seeing the most of any wet and windy weather and best of any dry and settled weather in the south. Temperatures may be generally slightly below average. Then as we head into early April, there is a very high degree of uncertainty. UK Outlook for Tuesday 22 Mar 2016 to Thursday 31 Mar 2016:

Initially next week it is likely that high pressure will continue to dominate the weather across the United Kingdom. This will bring mainly dry weather with mostly cloudy skies, although there may be a little sunshine in eastern areas. As we head towards the Easter weekend a gradual transition to more unsettled weather looks the most likely trend, with stronger winds and outbreaks of rain affecting the north and northwest, whilst parts of the south hold on to the driest weather for longer, although confidence on this remains low at this stage. The temperature should be close to or perhaps a bit below the average for late March, and there is a risk of overnight frost at times.

UK Outlook for Friday 1 Apr 2016 to Friday 15 Apr 2016:

During the first half of April there is currently a high degree of uncertainty over the forecast. There may be significant swings in the weather through the period, with the possibility of both settled and unsettled spells. However, it may be that for a while early in April we could see a cold, unsettled northerly airflow developing, with rain and showers affecting eastern areas while the west enjoys more settled conditions. Then as we head towards the middle of the month there is a slightly higher risk of an easterly airflow developing, this giving unsettled conditions across southern areas with the north having the best of any settled weather. Temperatures should average out at near or slightly below average, with a risk of overnight frosts, more so in the north.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 23 Mar 2016 to Friday 1 Apr 2016:

As we head towards the Easter weekend a gradual transition from the current mostly quiet and benign spell to more unsettled weather looks the most likely trend. Stronger winds and occasional rain will affect mainly the north and northwest, while parts of the south are more likely to hold on to drier weather for longer, although confidence on this remains low at this stage. The temperature should be close to or perhaps a bit below the average for late March, and there is a risk of overnight frost at times. Finally, as we head towards April there are currently signs that settled conditions may once again start to dominate the weather across the British Isles.

UK Outlook for Saturday 2 Apr 2016 to Saturday 16 Apr 2016:

During the first half of April there is currently a high degree of uncertainty over the forecast. There may be significant swings in the weather through the period, with the possibility of both settled and unsettled spells. However, overall it looks likely that an easterly or southeasterly airflow will predominate during this period and this would lead to southern and southwestern areas being most at risk from unsettled conditions while northern parts would be most likely to have the best of any drier, brighter, more settled spells. The temperature during this period is most likely to average out at close to or colder than average for early April, and there is a risk of overnight frosts occurring, more so in the north.

UK Outlook for Thursday 24 Mar 2016 to Saturday 2 Apr 2016:

The current spell of benign weather is expected to change by the Easter weekend. Maundy Thursday should become cloudy and breezy, with outbreaks of rain spreading eastwards across the country, though probably not reaching the southeast until late in the day. Brighter weather with sunny spells, and showers mainly in the west are expected to follow for Good Friday. The rest of the Easter period and the following week are likely to be unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed by some dry and bright interludes. It is also expected to become windy at times, with the wettest and windiest conditions probably occurring in the south and west. Temperatures are expected to be near average, although some day to day fluctuations are likely.

UK Outlook for Sunday 3 Apr 2016 to Sunday 17 Apr 2016:

During the first part and middle of April there is currently a high degree of uncertainty over the forecast. Although April may well start unsettled, there may be significant swings in the weather through the period, with the possibility of both settled and unsettled spells. However, overall it looks likely that an easterly or southeasterly airflow may increasingly predominate during this period and this would lead to southern and southwestern areas being most at risk from unsettled conditions while northern parts would be most likely to have the best of any drier, brighter, more settled spells. The temperature during this period is most likely to average out at close to or colder than normal for early April, and there is a risk of overnight frosts occurring, especially in the north.

UK Outlook for Friday 25 Mar 2016 to Sunday 3 Apr 2016:

The current spell of benign weather is expected to change by the Easter weekend. Overnight rain should have cleared from the north and west by dawn on Good Friday, but may linger into the afternoon in the southeast. A brief drier and brighter interlude is then expected before more rain arrives later on Friday and during Saturday. The rest of the Easter period and the following week are likely to be unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed by some dry and bright interludes. It is also expected to become windy with gales at times, with the wettest and windiest conditions probably occurring in the west and northwest. Temperatures are expected to vary around average, best generally in the east, often rather cold in the west and northwest.

UK Outlook for Monday 4 Apr 2016 to Monday 18 Apr 2016:

The start of April is expected to continue unsettled and windy at times with showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed by some dry and bright interludes. The wettest and windiest weather probably occurring in the north and west. Overnight frost and fog is possible in the drier interludes. Overall temperatures should be near or somewhat below normal although day to day fluctuations are expected, which could be quite marked as is usual in April. There are indications that this pattern may slowly change during the second and third weeks of April. However, there is a good deal of uncertainty as to what any change will herald, other than it should become somewhat drier.

Monday 21 March—Sunday 27 March
Finally, some changes afoot...

This week will finally bring about a shift in the generally settled weather pattern that we have seen over the last week or so. The transition will take place later this week over a couple of days, so that by the Easter weekend, Atlantic weather systems will bring a mixture of wet, windy and mild spells, followed by drier brighter and marginally cooler intervals.

On Monday the high is expected to bring largely dry and partly cloudy conditions for the majority of the UK. One or two spots across central and western England are likely to start off on a bright and frosty note. There should be some good spells of brightness through Monday for some, particularly in the east. The cloud might be thick enough to generate the odd shower though, most likely across western regions of the UK. Tuesday and Wednesday will be similar, with most places staying dry and with a mixture of cloud and sunny spells. although northwestern parts will start to see thickening cloud, with the chance of some heavier showers later on Wednesday for western Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Through the course of Thursday and Friday, weather fronts will drift across the UK from west to east, bringing a decent spell of rainfall for all parts, with some good clear skies to follow. Indeed the theme of bands of rain, followed by clearer intervals will be the theme for much of the Easter weekend. So although we can expect some rain and windier, cooler conditions at times through the Easter weekend, there will be spells of bright and dry weather in between.

Monday 28 March—Sunday 3 April
Out like a lamb? Not likely!

Moving towards the end of the month and into the start of April, it looks likely that the changeable theme will continue. Although there is a degree of uncertainty regarding the day to day details, it looks as if the jet stream will be suitably positioned to continue to drive Atlantic weather systems across the UK at times. This set up will most likely lead to spells of mild, wet and windy weather, followed by brighter, showery and cooler interludes. The best of any drier weather will most probably be across northern and eastern parts of the UK, with southern and western parts seeing the wettest and windiest weather. Night frosts will be possible in any clear overnight spells, most probable across northern parts of the UK.

Monday 4 April—Sunday 17 April
Bit early for May flowers, but April showers?

Although it looks likely that April's weather will begin on an changeable note, confidence in the forecast conditions for the rest of the first half of April is quite low, even by longer range forecast standards. That said, the latest best estimates offered by the computer forecast models suggest that as April progresses, there is a possibility that pressure will begin to build again in the vicinity of the UK. Lengthy spells of dry and perhaps slightly cooler than average conditions could affect the UK at times, with the scope for some frosty nights. There will still be the scope for some wetter conditions at times though, most likely towards the south. So, initially at least, there will be the chance of a few April showers at times, which of course is not that surprising.

Next week

As spring progresses, many people will of course wondering if we can expect a spell of warmer weather?. Next week's issue will cover the end of April, so make sure you stay in touch with our thoughts here at the BBC Weather Centre. Happy Easter!

UK Outlook for Saturday 26 Mar 2016 to Monday 4 Apr 2016:

Frontal systems moving in from the Atlantic will maintain unsettled weather across all parts throughout the rest of the Easter holiday period. So all parts can expect spells of persistent rain from time to time, but with some brighter, showery conditions in-between frontal systems. The rain is likely to be heavy at times, and also accompanied by strong winds, especially in exposed western areas where gales or severe gales are expected at times. Occasional snow can be expected across the hills and mountains in the north. For the rest of the period, the unsettled theme is most likely to continue, with further spells of wet and windy weather to come. The rain heaviest and the wind strongest towards the west and northwest. Temperatures near or slightly below average.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 5 Apr 2016 to Tuesday 19 Apr 2016:

Early indications suggest that the progression of frontal systems from the Atlantic may well ease with high pressure having more of an influence again. This would probably mean less unsettled, though still rather changeable weather at times. As often the case in April, large variations in weather type and temperature may occur from day to day. Overall, temperatures are more likely to stay below average than above at this stage.

This would probably mean less unsettled weather, although still with changes from day to day. As often the case in April, large variations in weather type and temperature may occur. Overall, temperatures are more likely to stay below average than above at this stage.

UK Outlook for Monday 28 Mar 2016 to Wednesday 6 Apr 2016:

Frontal systems moving in from the Atlantic will maintain unsettled weather across the UK through this period. Spells of persistent, sometimes heavy rain can be expected, but with some brighter, showery conditions in-between. The majority of the rain is likely in the west and parts of the south with this least persistent in more sheltered east and northeastern areas. Strong winds are also expected at times, including on Easter Monday, especially in exposed western and southern areas where gales or severe gales are possible. Occasional snow can be expected across the hills and mountains in the north, particularly in the showers. Temperatures should be near or slightly below average and feeling cold in wet and windy conditions.

UK Outlook for Thursday 7 Apr 2016 to Thursday 21 Apr 2016:

Early indications suggest that the progression of frontal systems from the Atlantic may well ease with an east or southeasterly flow developing. This would probably mean less unsettled weather, particularly in the north and west although still with changes from day to day. As is often the case in April, large variations in weather type and temperature are likely to occur. Overall, temperatures are more likely to stay below average than above at this stage, with a greater prospect of warmth later in the period.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 29 Mar 2016 to Thursday 7 Apr 2016:

Frontal systems moving in from the Atlantic will maintain predominantly unsettled weather across the UK through this period. Spells of persistent, sometimes heavy rain can be expected, but with some brighter, showery conditions in-between. The majority of the rain is likely in the west and parts of the south, with less for more sheltered east and northeastern areas. Breezy and gusty for most with the risk of gales in exposure. Severe gales or storm force winds are possible in far northern and northeastern parts at times. Occasional snow can be expected over the hills and mountains in the north, particularly in the showers. Temperatures should be near or slightly below average and it may feel cold at times during wet and windy spells.

UK Outlook for Friday 8 Apr 2016 to Friday 22 Apr 2016:

Early indications suggest that the progression of frontal systems from the Atlantic may well ease. This brings the increasing chance of longer drier spells of weather, particularly across the Northwest, with the Southwest perhaps continuing to see wetter, more unsettled conditions. As is often the case in April, large variations in weather type and temperature are likely to occur. Overall, temperatures are more likely to average out at near normal, although there should be warm spells developing at times.
