Max 19.7°C today so not quite hitting the magic spring 20 but boy did it feel great in the shade- only days ago that was the conservatory temp.

With the chiffchaffs singing, the windows at work open and the first few loosening of ties and complaints about the warmth in a stuffy room and stuffy culture, I really got my boat floated by dreams of early summer!

well enjoy in 8 weeks the nights start drawing in!

. . . Oh, wait. I've got that wrong. But in a way, it is true as we always get to have our most notable heatwaves after the summer solstice.

Given how dull and chilly it is being at this end at the moment, I think I wouldn't be none the wiser when the northerly airflow does become established over us as we go into the weekend and into next week, at least that'll bring some fine sunny breaks our way before the obligatory solar-powered cumulus bubble up and fill in the sky in the afternoon.

Granted, parts of the UK did get properly warm in the past two days so it would come as a breakdown to some.

You're absolutely right Ian; and actually, with our maritime climate, oceanic thermal inertia equates to warmer nights in particular in the second half July through August. Late August minima are higher on average than late June, at the solstice.

It's sunny here currently between the wintry mix of showers. At around 3°C it's not bad for January.

Hang on this isn't the winter moaning thread...?

13C today's high which is a little below normal, but with a dew point hovering just above freezing it has felt pretty darn cold out of the sun!!

It's so grey, lifeless and damp at this end that the daises and dandelions have already closed up early for the day. And how could 11.2 C and 60% humidity feel so cold and clammy?

Update: It's now p***ing down.

Cold and windy and sunny and snowy and haily. Not sure whether I love it or hate it!

Hate is too mild a word for this detestable spell of weather. Foul, rancid and unpleasant. Not bringing any notable cold for late April. A horrible spell of zero meterological worth.

This time last year we got heavy snow and several centimetres accumulating in a short period of time. This year endless days of horrid sleety rain, wet snow and nasty cold winds. Can't go outside without a hat and gloves. To get this day in day out in late April is hideous.

Only barely scraped a frost this month which is unreal for such a cold April. Warm April's in the past would have managed more and the fact that this year's solitary lame effort of -0.3C came on one of the warmest days says it all

Got a colder max (5.1C) during last years warm April as well and also managed down to -1.9C on 8th May putting this April's inadequate dross to shame.

The continued lack of pleasant or interesting weather is just depressing in the extreme

Have people really hated this week so much? We've had incredible convection, clouds, large hail, snow, frosts, heavy downpours, mist, warm sunshine (out of the shade at least) and low overnight temps. It has been a fascinating week and resembles more of the 'up and down' temps that the US/Can get at this time of year where one winter it feels like spring and next winter.

Not much of a rant but more frustration as it's May soon and this morning we had rain and hail with soft hail then a flake of sleet. I love this weather but this cold wintry weather would have occurred back in January. I am just upset that we have had a good week of cold weather only to find out it never occurred back in winter. Soft hail was nice to watch this morning (930-10am) on and off. Temperature fluctuated. We had a frost last night by 11pm - temp was +2c only! - The while week the Exeter has seen just as much if not more wintry weather than the entire winter of 2015/16 put together.

Just wish we can have seasons. In away it is good that it reminds me of the days when I was in Canada - In Calgary 2005 - I remember the March 2005 when it was 18 or 19c and the next few days it snowed and never got above -5c. Then there was a May snowstorm of "2-3" before it warmed up to +16 or 17c the next day and I remember (thanks to Chinook winds).

At least there are seasons in Canada and regardless of the volatile weather in Canada and the USA - Snow/blizzards (except perhaps Florida) and Polar vortex cold is expected and occurs every year and warm hot summers are inevitable. Unlike here in the UK when it could be wet and windy 13-15c for a week in winter with night-time temperatures of +14c and you could have a max of +8 or 9c with hail or sleet showers with frost in the APRIL into May.

It's negative but I feel we would have a rubbish summer!!!

Personally I feel the weather is more volatile and changeable than it's ever been. We live in SW France now and one of the reasons we came here was for a better climate and an outdoor way of life. There is a belief in France that once you are south of the Loire Valley the climate improves dramatically and is warm and sunny for much of the year.

We have endured an abysmal winter here in the Charente and spring is also turning out to be awful. The weather is absolutely all over the place and we haven't managed to string together more than two or three days of dry, warm and sunny weather. It is 13 degrees outside as I type this. 13 degrees and it's May tomorrow??!! The locals are shaking their heads in disbelief. It's just crap and the weather shows no sign of settling into a prolonged spell of warmth and high pressure!!

Also the wind seems to be such a feature of the last six months weather...it's always blowing a gale. The influence of the Atlantic and the Jet stream appears to grow ever stronger, year on year! How bad does it have to get before people sit up and take notice?

Summers over the past decade still weren't as bad as the horror shows of the 1960s and 1980s. 1987 has to be the worst summer ever for the simple fact that every single summer month was very cold.

Amazing! 13.9°C and sunny; we had a BBQ. Huge, grey, shower clouds have dropped the temperature to 5.9°C. That's an 8C drop. Some of the rain had big, white drops; now I know I'm snow-starved (haven't seen a flake this season) but could it be sleet?

The medium range outputs are looking more encouraging in terms of warmer weather but potentially thundery later on down the line. So with that to mind, as much as I would appreciate a bit of warmth and a nice drop of sunshine during the day to gladden the soul, I'm a little less keen on the humid nights. That's when it sounds like I'm living next door to the X-Men headquarters as the neighbours living there turn into mutants and become explosive whenever the weather does become warm and muggy.

Not only is it impossible to get two acceptable days at the weekend it is impossible not to get at least one day that is a stinking, depressing write-off

Unexpected good day yesterday with lots of sunshine but today is just vile. Slate grey, damp and windy after earlier rain and just 7.8C. More like the start of November than the start of May. Though, having said that the start of November last year looks to have produced three better days than anything in this ghastly spring with light winds and sunshine. I was in Lanzarote at the time so didn't experience it.

This year is one of only six since 1941 where the temperature at Dyce has failed to reach 15C by the end of April. Three have occurred since 2001 which just says it all about how monotonous and tedious our climate is becoming with extremes squeezed out at both end of the spectrum. This year is one of the worst with a high of only 14.3C - only 1951 and 2001 were lower for the first four months.

Here's the list of dire years that failed to reach 15C by end of April with the highest temperature followed by date of first 15C in brackets.

1951: 13.9 (12th May)
1979:14.4 (11th May)
1986: 14.7 (1st May)
2001:13.5 (2nd May)
2006: 14.9 (3rd May)
2016: 14.3

2001 the worst but I certainly can remember some warm feeling days in April 2001 even though it was only 13C. Can't say that this year because any time it reached that level there was the nagging wind that is now ever present regardless of the synoptics. No 15C forecast by Tuesday so by then 2016 will be sitting alongside only 1951 and 1979 as one of the three most warmth starved starts to spring. It really is pitiful given that 15C can be reached at any time of year, even late December with no insolation.

The lack of spring growth seems to be worse than even 2013 at this stage as the second half of April 2013 was warm. Though there were only two slight frosts this April, the warmest min I recorded was only 5.5C which is unbelievable and means there wasn't a single 24-hour period in which the temperature remained above growing level.
