Not only is it impossible to get two acceptable days at the weekend it is impossible not to get at least one day that is a stinking, depressing write-off
Unexpected good day yesterday with lots of sunshine but today is just vile. Slate grey, damp and windy after earlier rain and just 7.8C. More like the start of November than the start of May. Though, having said that the start of November last year looks to have produced three better days than anything in this ghastly spring with light winds and sunshine. I was in Lanzarote at the time so didn't experience it.
This year is one of only six since 1941 where the temperature at Dyce has failed to reach 15C by the end of April. Three have occurred since 2001 which just says it all about how monotonous and tedious our climate is becoming with extremes squeezed out at both end of the spectrum. This year is one of the worst with a high of only 14.3C - only 1951 and 2001 were lower for the first four months.
Here's the list of dire years that failed to reach 15C by end of April with the highest temperature followed by date of first 15C in brackets.
1951: 13.9 (12th May)
1979:14.4 (11th May)
1986: 14.7 (1st May)
2001:13.5 (2nd May)
2006: 14.9 (3rd May)
2016: 14.3
2001 the worst but I certainly can remember some warm feeling days in April 2001 even though it was only 13C. Can't say that this year because any time it reached that level there was the nagging wind that is now ever present regardless of the synoptics. No 15C forecast by Tuesday so by then 2016 will be sitting alongside only 1951 and 1979 as one of the three most warmth starved starts to spring. It really is pitiful given that 15C can be reached at any time of year, even late December with no insolation.
The lack of spring growth seems to be worse than even 2013 at this stage as the second half of April 2013 was warm. Though there were only two slight frosts this April, the warmest min I recorded was only 5.5C which is unbelievable and means there wasn't a single 24-hour period in which the temperature remained above growing level.
