It's a bit like a back building exercise here as no sooner one shower/storm passed another heads in. They seem to be developing around Bruton and Shepton Mallet then following the A367 North towards Bath.

Outside of my zone it looks like the area between Pembrokeshire and the Brecons is having a lively early evening too.

Anyone between Wells and Shepton Mallet at the moment must be getting hammered by rain and lightning. I'm a little away to the NE but constant rumbling thunder and steadily darkening light levels looks very ominous.

This is rapidly becoming one of the most noteworthy if local thunder events of recent years around here. From 16:00 hrs thunder began and has continued more on than off until now and it's still going. Mendip area has been clobbered by torrential rain and lightning and after a brief lull it's back building yet again.

Stuck for 3-4 hours or so under the central line of a local convergence zone that brought one after another of violent thunderstorms. The line spawned approx from just west of stokes bay to Selsey, and sign waved a little allowing the storms to occasionally clip the IOW and towns such Horndean, and Cowplain to the north of Portsmouth. This left my location being either clipped from the north, south, or hit directly.

My location at the time was near southsea seafront and I was several floors up with a good view of the surrounding area. My location was under continuess rain for the whole time, but some of the storm cores where severely intense with rain. The local gosport station was recording rain rates over 160mm and hour at times!!!

I witnessed the cores come in one after another and the best way to describe them was a wall of dense fog obscuring everything under it as it approached, I watched a building some 400-500 meters away vaninsh in some of the cores... These cores were pure rain!!! And lasted 5-10 minutes a time.

That afternoon locally 4-6 inches of rain fell.. The common was ankle deep in water, and the council mobile pump units were in action none stop clearing the roads that had become lagoons and rivers.

The thunder lightning was notable but not that memorable as we get worse, however quite a few properties got struck. It was the very localised intense rain that went on for quite a few hours that was memorable.

There was a couple of real house shaking crashes of thunder in the night between midnight and 2am. 11.8mm fell.

Thundery showers from warmish plumes have become quite common this Spring. Lets hope the pattern continues into real Summer.

An intense localised thunderstorm moved up across the New Forest and up the Test valley yesterday around 10 pm , which gave most intense rainfall i can remember, it lashed down for over an hour with multiple flashes and thunder, and was more like i experienced in Singapore .with huge rain drops when i checked out the radar , it showed up as a red cluster and over us it was showing as black. The roads were awash in Romsey but 4 miles away it was bone dry ! I will be interested in how much rain actually fell . But as it was so local , it depends if it was measured.

Then there was an absolute cloudburst which went on for 15 to 20 minutes. The rain was deafening in our accommodation and drowned out any thunder. Rain rates of 100mm ph or more were being picked up from these localised cells and I can quite believe it!

Two distant rumbles from fairly unconvincing sky's. Ok another in less than a minute. Seems to be just to the west of Poole.

We have avoided the worst of it so far, though rain rates were up to 50mm/hour just a while ago, only 9mm of rain has fallen, which is welcome for topping up the pool and watering the  garden.

The rain has continued in various levels of intensity since my last post. Total now 61.6mm. I'll need to see some official local readings before deciding whether to believe it or not!
