Interesting stuff from GFS as that low slips under and phases with the Euro trough. It brings in a bit of milder air to the south, but also brings in plenty of moisture, so it would be a messy rain to snow event for many. But of course much too far out for that sort of detail. The broad-scale picture still supports a high to the NE.

Which is nice.

UKMO looks less promising IMO - the high looks to be slipping SE rather than heading back to Greenland?

Edit: on second thoughts heights are building over Greenland as well - as per GFS the high to the SE has to move out of the way so it is probably similar!

So GFS is back in BOOM territory and the UKMO is looking similar at 144

We have to hope that as next Wednesday the 6th gets closer to the reliable timeframe, that the blocking is still shown.

GFS 12z is definitely up there with the all time December classics!

It's about time someone posted the GEM 12z just to redress the balance...

The GFS synoptics once again suggests to me that there will be quite a range of options on the ensemble set. Things could really end up anywhere in a week. Cold and northerly, cold and snowy where mild meets cold (to do with position if the Low our west), mild or cold and anticyclonic, or indeed milder and more westerly. Too much uncertainty for any real confidence unless you like emotional roller coasters.

WRT GEM even the initialization data isn't yet available on CMC. In the past I can recall some funny stuff happening with "different" versions of GEM appearing at the same time. Hopefully that won't be the case today.

While both GFS 6z and 12z are back on board with a decent cold spell from ~7 December, I can't say I feel very confident that it will work out that way. The link up of the mid-Atlantic High to the Greenland High looks very fragile and and iffy, particularly because it is further out that t144. Short waves popping up at short notice could kill things dead. ECM will be interesting tonight to see if it comes back on board, but even if it does, there seems a long way to go before this one will be settled.
