I do wonder if I'll ever see my dream - a catastrophic snowfall event. Ideally around 72-96 hours of heavy snowfall, dumping several feet across the entire UK (I imagine Portsmouth, Exeter, Leysdown and The Wirral may just get moderate sleet). The whole country crippled, a national emergency declared, all roads impassable. And it lasts for 2-3 weeks

Just as long as I'd had ample warning to stock up on a couple of generators, fuel, food and a camping stove.

Will this be the coldest week of winter or the most horrible week of another horrendous winter? The evidence from today suggests the latter.

Clear skies and no wind at all yesterday from sunset until midnight saw the temperature plunge to a truly bone-chilling -0.4C. Couldn’t contain my excitement at seeing it get that low. After midnight it shot up as rain and cloud moved in continuing the vile start to February.  By dawn it was not in the slightest bit cold, at 2C, to be followed by absolutely useless soul destroying grey rubbish all day long.

There is no sign of any decent snowfall on the horizon. The synoptics for the foreseeable are dire and the situation is beyond desperate when we are rapidly approaching the unprecedented  5th anniversary of the last time there was more than 6cm of snow on the ground

As far as I can see the outlook for here is 3C grey rubbish for the next few days then mild wet crap on Thursday followed by another miserable weekend. If we do get any snow overnight tonight  it will likely be horrid wet stuff, aka ‘white rain’ that fails to produce photogenic scenes. The stuff nightmares are made of and reminiscent of the unpleasant and extremely uninteresting pile of dross that was February 2017.

Increasingly likely that the cold spell in the 2nd week of December won’t be beaten and, apart from one night, that wasn’t even particularly cold. It’s telling that the mean minimum for the coldest week, a pathetic  -1.8C, is the highest for any winter since 2013/14. A further piece of evidence to support my view that this winter has been poor even by the standards of the past few

This should be in the media thread but i am moaning as I live in Exeter and this is the reason why:

An organised but light band of snow approaching N. Devon and Cornwall and then as it moves inland and southwards across mainland Devon look at above map and what it will bring to Exeter as and when it doe at 15:00 as seen below!? - Of all places guess what Exeter experiences!? But have to LOL - PS That blue shade on the map over DARTMOOR to the west of Exeter is frost (daytime frost) I assume NOT rain if there is rain you will no where it will fall in Devon tomorrow!!

It's a wind up really. -Has to be Exeter doesn;t it! ha ha!

Not only is North Devon and most of Cornwall staying colder but it's more snowy too!

Feels balmy here - little or no wind at all. The max for today was meant to be +3c at 1500 well we are already some 2c above that anyway!

Typical isn't it?

Over the past 27 years there have only been 2 occasions in Portsmouth where a significant amount of snow has remained on the ground as snow for more then 24 hours, and by significant I'm talking 4cm or more!!!

So if anybody wants to moan because they missed out on a little snow then please spare a thought for us down here on this little island.

In contrast what you might consider to be a poor summer would be probably be a good one for me, so remember that the next time you are complaining you haven't reached 30C all summer :)

What a stunning ‘coldest week of winter’. Deep, crisp and even snow, brilliant blue arctic skies and sharp frosts. None of those things were evident during this dire, grey and depressing week. When the sun did come out this afternoon it reached 7.6C– a mild, March, springlike day.

-3.2C was the lowest managed all week, similar well inland at Aboyne and further inland Braemar managed about -5C. Simply dreadful and even that was just a one off . The rest of the nights either didn’t get below freezing or only just.

Each successive cold snap in this embarrassment of a winter has been more puny and inadequate than the last:

Cold snap #1, 8th–11th December: -6.1C

Cold snap #2, 27th-29th December: -5.5C

Cold snap #3, 6th-8th January: -5.4C

Cold snap #4: 17th-21st January: -3.9C

Cold snap #5: 5th -7th February: -3.2C

No snow lying for 6 weeks now bar that utterly useless watered down wallpaper paste there was on Tuesday morning which thankfully was gone by lunchtime. Shocking outlook as well so that’s the first half of February as good as a write-off now. At this rate it’ll be joining January as the least wintry since 2014. Would be the 8th poor February for snowfall in a row which would exceed the dire run of seven duds in a row from 1979-85

What bugs me is France - Paris has seen almost 1ft of snow a few days ago and expect to get up to 10cms of fresh snow tomorrow -That's on top of Existing snow! Yet southern England (most areas) - take London hasn't even seen a flake!! Yet this system passes the south as rain but turns to snow over France !!

Not fair really! DOn't you think?
