Remember this well, 20 years ago on 9th July 1993, a cold front brought a dramatic drop in temperature and heralded a sustained period of below average temperatures.

Michael Fish says the midday temperature in central London was the lowest such in July since records began in 1940

A real shocker this one. If this is the day in question the front moved through around here (Whitfield, near Dover) at lunchtime dropping the temperature from 16c to 12c in about an hour. If my memory serves me correct this was also the day that Whipsnade recorded a noon temperature of something ridiculuous like 8c (46f)

This is the last summer which failed to reach 80ºF at Birmingham airport. (this also happened in 1974, 1977 and 1978).

-2C 850s over NW scotland is remarkable. I suspect showery precipatation would have turned wintry above about 900m.

In November 1993 we had some very heavy snowfall in North Yorkshire right down to sea level and it last just over a week!

Christmas 1993 was also a white Christmas where we were. Turned milder in Jan 1994 I think, don't recall much snow after Dec 1993.

July - December 1993 was a pretty cold period where we were.
