Weekend sounds great:

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Warm and bright across the west on Friday, cooler with low cloud lingering along the east coast. Rain clearing east during Saturday. Further rain likely on Sunday.

At least it's not a bank holiday up here!

Another shockingly bad BBC national TV forecast this morning. A predicted high of 17°C but an actual max of 22°C. In contrast to the the continuing theme of of rubbish national forecasts the BBC Scottish forecast for the same time period and location was a much more accurate 21°C. The funny thing is the max on last night's national forecast was 20°C. I wonder what caused the three degree downgrade (and significant decrease in accuracy) between last night's and this morning's forecast?

What annoys me most is that the BBC Forecasts often show temperatures at the warmest part of the day, i.e. around 16.00 in the summer, and the figures shown are different to what the forecaster is saying the maximum is going to be. For example, 23C is shown but they say "Expect 25 or 26C in any prolonged sunshine".

If these are the forecast maximum temperatures then show them! Saying one thing and displaying another is just confusing to the viewers. Sometimes they even just admit that the displayed values are too low!

Today has the potential to be another woeful temperature forecast for today for here, from the BBC. The national forecast has a high of 16°C after the cloud is forecast to clear. Given the atmospheric conditions if the cloud clears and the sun comes out it shold in theory be at least 3-4 degrees higher, if not more.

UK Outlook for Monday 2 Sep 2013 to Wednesday 11 Sep 2013:

An unsettled start to this period in the north, cloud and rain spreading south to affect the Midlands and Wales at times, showers then following on Wednesday. Rather breezy with strong winds in the north and a risk of local gales. Thereafter, a more of a northwest-southeast split is likely. Northern and western areas are likely to remain rather changeable and windy, with showers or perhaps longer outbreaks of rain interspersed with brighter periods. Meanwhile, in the south and east, some rain or showers are likely, but here there is likely to be more in the way of drier and brighter spells. Temperatures will be near normal initially, but feeling locally warm in the southeast. It is then expected to become slightly cooler with some chilly nights possible.

UK Outlook for Thursday 12 Sep 2013 to Thursday 26 Sep 2013:

Initially some southern and eastern areas will probably see the best of any drier and brighter conditions, however elsewhere there is a greater chance of seeing rain or showers at times with risk of local gales. Thereafter, the probability of more unsettled conditions prevailing across the country increases, but still with some brighter and warmer interludes. Temperatures look likely to be generally near normal for the time of year.

Standards are not what they used to be! BBC forecast after the 10 o'clock news had "Autumnal". That word should not be capitalised!

Weather wise, definitely cooler weekend forecast, but still "usable".

UK Outlook for Sunday 15 Sep 2013 to Sunday 29 Sep 2013:

During the second half of September there is no clear signal emerging for any particular weather pattern to dominate across the UK. As a consequence, the chances of above and below average rainfall are equally probable. However, in terms of temperature, the balance of probabilities favours slightly above average conditions.

Hows about that then?

Today's going downhill day has thus far been sunnier than yesterday. A tad cooler perhaps, but a far nicer day, and improving by the hour!

I bet they forecast the bloody deluge correctly though.

It is just me who finds it grates when a new reader, or worse a weather forecast, says something like "the temperatures have halved since yesterday".... Of course, we all know what they mean (30c to 15c or something) but scientifically incorrect (halving temperature from 30c would take you down to ~-120c - i.e. half way to absolute zero), or am I just being pedantic.

Andrew

PS They never say temperatures have halved in winter when it goes from, say, 4c to 2c!

Well I've never banged the coffee table and said "damit why can't they talk about absolute temperatures measured using the Kelvin scale?!", but each to their own I guess
