According to the Met Office, 316.4mm of rainfall at Seathwaite in Cumbria from midnight to midnight of the 19th November 2009

Seathwaite (09.00 GMT to 09.00 GMT)
395.6mm in 2 days
456.4mm in 3 days
495.0mm in 4 days

The phenomenal rainfalls was caused by a slow moving front and orographic rainfall.

And to show how orographic this event was, the 3 days total here was around 75mm, wet but not spectacular.  I had more rain on 11th October 2005 (24 hour period total here around 100mm - which was probably the wettest day in West Cumbria since at least the 1960's.  Fortunately that event came after a few weeks of relatively dry weather, unlike 2009!

I thought that period gave the UK a new 24 hour rainfall record. I gather that is now just over 12 inches.


 



Wettest 24 hour hour period, but not the wettest day in the UK -work that one out


Indeed I think just about every rainfall record was broken in Cumbria that month, wettest 24 hour, wettest 48 hour wettest 72 hour wettest week and wettest month IIRC.

Good post and here are all the figures. They are really amazing.

The 24 hour, 48 hour, 72 hour and 96 hour records were all broken in succession . They are all now held by Seathwaite Farm in Cumbria.


The 96 hour record is very close to the annual average total for my part of the country.
