I came across this absolute gem a few days ago on Youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K1ofbWYUrM&list=FL-qx1S9CjZG_BDuAa0HRxxg&feature=mh_lolz

Incredible scenes of England's largest lake completely frozen over. Just wish I'd been around to see it, although my family lived about 1/2 mile away at the time!

The lake froze several times in the hundred years or so up to 1962/3....from memory (not literally ) 1878/9, 1894/5, 1916/7, 1928/9, 1946/7

Ice formed in Jan 1982 and Dec 2010 but the weather turned before the real ice set in

I would love to see these scenes again in my lifetime.

Excellent - note the lack of snow in the early part!

These days there would be a media witch hunt for the parents who let their kids out onto the ice...

Saint, did you see the picture of Derwentwater taken on Xmas Eve 2010? Cant remember where I saw it, but it looked more like Siberia than the Lakes!

Derwentwater is pretty shallow, especially compared to Windermere.

December 2010 was reckoned to be the coldest month in the Lake District since Feb 1895, colder even than Feb 1947
