I'll begin with the most phenominal aspect of winter 2013/14 at my home location, not far south of Salisbury:

In my records starting in 2003:

MonthTotal Precipitation (mm)Percent of Average2nd Highest Totalin Year…Last Winter Ahead By…
Dec '13182.0211.9151.2201230.8
Jan '14233.5305.6177.2200856.3
Feb '14179.5339.395.0201084.5
Season595.0276.5301.42007-8293.6

This last winter is so far ahead of the rest, it really is staggering. It's practically doubled my previous winter season record!

As each new month of the season is typically drier than the last, the anomalies just kept climbing, even though February had a lower total than January.

Now here's an interesting set of data when considered alongside the above...

MonthTotal Sunshine (hrs)Percent of AverageHighest or 2nd Highestin Year…Difference Is…
Dec '1373.4136.274.82008-1.4
Jan '1482.8142.885.72012-2.9
Feb '14106.1140.7125.32008-19.2
Season262.31.5236.5201225.9

The months were never record setters for sunshine, but were right up there at the top end. Those that do hold the record all had notable periods of mobile weather, which just goes to show how effective the return-polar maritime airmasses behind frontal systems can be for delivering decent sunshine totals in winter

Finally, we have the incredibly boring temperature data:

MonthMax AvgAnomalyRank (Leader)Min AvgAnomalyRank24h AvgAnomalyRank
Dec '139.11.32nd (2006|9.90)3.71.53rd (2006|4.81)6.41.42nd (2006|7.35)
Jan '148.71.84th (2005| 9.81)3.42.33rd (2008|5.39)6.02.03rd (2008|7.18)
Feb '149.11.82nd (2008|9.35)3.32.33rd (2011|4.27)6.22.13rd (2011|6.61)
Season9.01.62nd (2007|9.25)3.52.03rd (2007|4.43)6.21.82nd (2007|6.84)

It's cringing to see just how little variation there was across the season... with February even managing to match December's average maximum, and a total range of just 0.4*C for all the stats

It was consistently between 3rd and 2nd warmest, with the exception of the average maximum for January.

Just realised this... winter 2013-4 here saw more rain than the whole of 2010 or 2011... mind-boggling!

Just can't believe we haven't had one Northerly or easterly. I guess the closest we got was end of November beginning of December. - That colder spell was colder than any day I can remember in Dec, Jan and Feb.

I also distinctly remember during the beginning of January 2014- We were all (except perhaps Matty H) were ranting about the wet weather and the so called "New Year Old weather" boring GFS runs but something will come along etc quote and we were all saying that we still had another 8 to 10 weeks of winter left which is enough time for a week or so of cold frosty weather, an easterly or even 5 days of colder and drier weather etc. Yet here we are at the end of the first week of March!? - Yet, - how many days of snow had London seen falling, how many days of frost has there been?

It's the Polar Vortex - it's so cold over the USA in NE America that's giving us all this horrible weather. Also the lack of Temperature variation.

StormChaser touched on this one. - We quite often saw southern England at 9 or 10c with rain and Scotland at 8C and overcast!?? - Yet just on the otherwise of the Atlantic they had more than their fair share of snow. In Vegas I spoke to a couple from Detroit Michigan and they said they have had over 80 inches of snow!

I hope we do not have another winter like this ever again! - I look forward to spring and can only hope we don't get a crappy summer.
