Near average rain, near average temperatures until the last week.
Frequently windy. No air frost but at least three ground frosts.

Without just two significant wet days it would have been a relatively dry month.
Indeed after the two preceding dry months ground conditions are still very much on the dry side for the time of year.

Here's a series of graphs summarising how autumn 2014 has stacked up so far against the long term average (1981-2010):

Autumn Analysis '14

It's clearly apparent just how dominant above average temperatures have been, with a large number of days 2-6*C above the LTA and an if anything even larger number of nights in that range.

The 'extremity' seemed to oscillate between somewhat above and a long way above the LTA in September, before a drop off not long into October as the only period of near average conditions commenced, featuring a couple of particularly chilly nights with respect to the LTA. Then came the most extreme period of the season so far, with temperatures consistently coming in well above the LTA - enough to push the 7-day moving average minimum anomaly all the way up to just below +6*C by the end of October, an extraordinary feat!

The anomalies for that record breaking final day of October were close to +8*C both by day and night. Rarely is that seen within 2 months of the winter solstice; the sun doesn't pack enough punch to introduce the kind of variability seen April-September (for example, the record maximum set in 2003 is some 15*C above the LTA).

REPORT

October was another warmer than average month with the temperatures 0.8C above the long term mean from my station. There were some wet weather events through the mont totting up 87mm of rain but this is around the average for October. There were some isolated days with strong winds mostly around the passage of Gonzalo around the 21st but overall the wind was not a major feature. By far the biggest talking point was the warm period at the end of the month with 20.1C recorded on the 31st which beats my previous all time record of 20C being recorded on just 1 or 2 occasions many years back and that being on very early dates in the month. There was a thunderclap on the night of the 16th and distant lightning was visible overnight on the 8th. With no other notable events as such October turned out a warmer month than average with no air frost and rainfall close to average so nothing out of the ordinary this year.

A very warm month. A three way tie for the warmest day of the month which included the final day. From the 13th onwards the minimum only fell into single figures four times.

Rainfall overall was average although most of it fell in the first half of the month.

Having calculated the highest and lowest temps I've recorded for each day of the month (and the rest of the year for future use...), I've discovered that a record high maximum occurred five times in October:

17th: 18.2 beating 18.0*C (2005)

18th: 18.8 beating 18.0*C (2006)

19th: 18.8 beating 17.7*C (2013)

30th: 17.6 beating 17.0*C (2005)

31st: 20.0 beating 16.4*C (2009)

That last one has raised the bar by 3.6*C, equivalent to the UK max being lifted to 42.1*C... okay, maybe not, given how much more energy is needed to keep lifting the temperature once it's already that high.

So, some amazing achievements by October 2014, though the record used is only 2003-2013.

Reflecting the small size of the record, there were also two lowest minimums (5th and 12th with 3.0 and 2.2*C respectively).
