Rain, sleet and snow at Stansted. Really grim.
Planes coming from dusseldorf weezer and eindhoven are delayed by a few hours due to the low now going into Europe.

I agree about comments concerning the 'colour' of warning... Whereas a yellow may have been appropriate prior, as area and severity of event became apparent (even if that was in midst of event) the MetO should have upgraded... A similar thing happened in 2013 I recall when the NW had ~6inches.

The yellow warning was because the risk was low, not because the severity was low.

Would an amber warning made much difference, when most chose to ignore what the yellow warning said and still travel anyway?

There is a cold weather alert also from the met office pointing out the risk of snow and ice

I do try and keep my own forecasts as level headed as possible - but I still whinge when I miss out on the snow and we end up with damaging gale force winds anyway.

We had a around 2 cm of snow but none of it settled at ground level, still that's the first bit of snow I've seen for a long while. The last proper lying snow we had was in December 2010.

Aaarrgghh! Meltage!!!

Temp has fallen steadily (now down to 0.6c), snow still falling (albeit very lightly now) but we have the 'drip, drip' nightmare noise, and on roads, pavements where footsteps/car tracks were, it's now clear.

I know it's something to do with the dew point (although XCWeather still shows Liverpool DP at 0c), but could someone explain how it works?

Originally Posted by: Saint Snow

The temperature of melting (or wet) snow is always zero (see http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frigorific_mixture) and the dew point is the temperature at which water vapour will condense out of the atmosphere. So your melting snow is at zero and the dew point is above zero, water vapour will condense onto the melting snow, making it even wetter and melting it faster.

Alternatively, if the dew point is below zero (even if air temp is above zero), then any liquid water will evaporate from the snow, albeit slowly, therefore making it seem dry even if it is still melting a bit.

Ended up with a little over 20cm level covering on walls, and a little deeper on the grass. The wind has shaped some of it overnight. Very bright and cold this morning.

Almost all the snow gone here now - washed away by a streamer of rain showers from the NW.

There's few things more depressing than seeing rain wash snow away. It's somehow symptomatic of not just our crappy climate, but society in general - the boring rain sweeping away the fun & chaotic snow.

A couple of images from Sheffield.  First one out and about last night while the snow was in full flow.   And second one this morning showing how the weight of the snow brought down the rotary washing line (never happened before), showing the wetness and amount of snow...

A good covering in Stoke-on-Trent last night. I drove back from Birmingham, when the main snow band hit there for a bit. Roads were tricky but not bad, and then it started to melt as it turned to rain.

However on the M6 back up to Stoke, conditions turned poor past Stafford, two lanes were a whiteout and traffic was doing 35-40. Visibility was poor as well. I've done that drive in thick snow before back in 2009 I think, and this was a reminder of that night. There were a few spinouts and lost bumpers along the way.

In Stoke itself, roads were fairly clear as can be considering, so well done to the council for that, they were certainly much better than the M6. A good freeze last night as well, meant it was very crunchy this morning, lots of ice where it has melted and frozen snow.

Depths vary greatly though, I walked up the big hill to where there is usually more depth and was surprised to find less snow than down on my estate. I think it is nice because of how long its been since meaningful snow. Lots of people walking today, everyone happy.

Wintry showers (snow in heavier bursts) have deposited a slushy white layer on hills just north of Dover.  At Whitfield currently sleeting, hailing.

If the showers can keep going then there's a chance of a covering this evening.

Location Sheffield S6, about 250m asl - about 8" level snow here but more at higher elevations, guessing 10" above 400-500m asl  - had enough already, roll on warm weather!
