October was only the second month this year to record an above average CET. Overall we are still slightly below average for the year as a whole.

After an exceptionally mild November the CET for the year is now close to average. Slightly above the 1971-2000 mean but still slightly below the 1981-2010 mean.

PS: those graphs are fab; I love the cross-over in November.

Here are the final charts for the year. It looked at one point like the CET would finish below average and below 10C. But in the end the incredible warmth at the end of the year pushed us quite a bit above average.

The CET started December at 10.36C and finished at 10.29C so it hardly dropped at all in December. Usually the figure drops rapidly in the final month.

The competition winner is Neil M who predicted 10.27C.

Hadley show the final figure as 10.31C on this page http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcet/cetml1659on.dat

But that only takes the data to one decimal and does not allow for the fact that different months have different numbers of days so a straight mean across the 12 months is not totally accurate. The correct figure taking a mean of all the daily CETs is 10.29C.

Second place goes to domma with a prediction of 10.32C

GW, I hope you run this comp again, if only because your monthly updates give us a great view of what the year is doing. Besides, there is (and of course this is a guess, but if the El Nino is to have effect here it will be this year) a pretty good chance this year will break records.

Cheers GW, I won something at last , plus it makes up for my falling away in the monthly competition.

Well done to Domma too.

I hope you run this again GW, but I think it doesn't get used because most chat is on the Monthly CET competition threads, this thread did disappear for a while too.
