Rainfall well above normal but not frequent. Over half from thunderstorms on 22-23rd. Rain days were actually below normal - average is 9.

I was lucky in that I saw much less rain than many parts of the south in August. First ten days of the month were fairly decent and dry. A brief hot spell on the 21st and 22nd was the only highlight in the rest of the month that was rather cool and wet. Fairly warm nights helped the keep the mean temperature up.

Summary - A dry, fine and warm first 10 days of the month with High Pressure on the near continent providing a settled spell of weather with predominantly anticyclonic SW'lies. An area of low pressure developed over Biscay on the 12th moving NE'wards to sit over Denmark by the 16th. The weather became humid and very wet for a time on the 13th with many stations recording 35-40mm locally with a near daytime darkness event just before noon. Conditions became drier, but cooler between 14-17th with a NW'ly feed before a wet and very cool day on the 18th. Pressure rose on the 19th and another fine and warm spell of weather occurred between 19-22nd with a maximum temperature reaching 28.6c on Saturday 22nd. A weak cold front on the 23rd ushered in cooler atlantic air during the afternoon. The 24-27th August were cloudy and wet days with frequent rain or showers in a strong SW'ly breeze. It became finer, warmer and humid at the months end but with thundery showers overnight.

Temperatures - slightly above average with 20c exceeded on 21 days.
