Storm Abigail is currently beginning to show its hand across northern and western parts so I thought we should have a new thread to celebrate the UK's first named storm (shush Andy ).

So any storm reports could go in here, be that wind, waves, rainfall etc.

Perhaps the thread could also be used for monitoring some of the potentially very high rainfall totals over some western parts over the weekend?

Anyway it must really be autumn now as a few of the shipping forecast areas have winds at hurricane force for a time on the current forecast: http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/marine-shipping-forecast#?tab=map

Love the Pun,Doc.
Looks like a bit of a battering on the way for for the North West.
There might also be some snow and gales further inland for the uplands.

I see that Benbecula has recently reached a sustained windspeed of 56mph. Breezy.

Does sound quite grim from where I'm sitting at the relatively safe end of the country. I'm sure we'll get to have our turn later on down the line.

Pretty breezy even down here, moreso that I expected (though to be honest, my eyes have been on the weekend event rather than this storm).   Waiting now to see if the cold from fizzles out once it hits the Severn vale

After a relatively pleasant day it's gusting above 40mph again here.
Met Office site suggests wet snow over the high ground round about tomorrow morning, first this autumn.

I have just edited the title of the thread to encompass the potentially significant rainfall for some over the weekend.

How about some foam?

I've never seen anything like that around here, although being near a northeast-facing coast means big waves are pretty rare.

Snowdonia and Cumbria have already has a lot of rain this week so there is likely to be some quick run off.  lets hope its not a repeat of 2009!

Highest gust of the day down this way was 38K. Several squally showers of rain and hail all afternoon.

Presumably in that case and the current storm it's combined with flooding? I just can't get my head around inches of foam just laying around on all surfaces!

As per the BBC forecasts some of the high res models are predicting locally over 200mm of rain possible in the Lake District and North Pennine areas over the weekend. The NMM seems to have the highest totals

All eyes on Cockermouth again potentially. Hopefully it isn't as bad as 2009, didn't that system dump around 100mm? Double that sounds bad to me.

The moisture is starting to gather out west now. Expecting a fair bit of rain here as it hits the Pennines.

Those on the Cheshire plain should be fairly dry thanks to the Welsh mountains.

Netweather radar shows several pixels over north Wales having received 76-96mm of rain in the last 6 hours. There's plenty more where that came from too!

Kendal currently under a severe flood warning.  1000 properties are being visited by the emergency services who are asking people to leave and go and stay with friends on higher ground or go to one of the reception services.   My OH (a member of Mountain Rescue) is helping to co-ordinate the doorknocking effort.

Peak river levels expected at 7am tomorrow morning and these are expected to be quite a lot higher than in previous floods over the last 15 years. My house is only just outside of the flood risk area, so I'm slightly nervous
