So Last night a tropical system formed in the Mediterranean, I half expected something like this to happen because the conditions were good; a cold front brought cold air at the upper levels and provided a good thermal gradient for formation; indeed some of the strongest medicanes of all time developed a few hours after a cold front passed. This one was short-lived though because its location was hardly ideal, being right next to land. That being said a nice eye wall formed for a couple of hours before it dissapated over Italy.

This is the third storm, with storms also forming on the 30th September, 22nd October. I have unofficially designated the Mediterranean tropical storm season to start September 1st and End 31st January. During the later part of the season Medicanes are far less common, but unusually strong systems (like the 1996 cat 2) tend to happen in winter. 

I'll be keeping an eye out for further developments; conditions remain very good for the next few days. We may get another one forming. 

Don't think it justifies a new thread, but unbelievably a 2nd medicane has formed in almost exactly the same place as before. Medistorm Debra just south of France, on the IR she looks to have developed a pinhole style eye and is gradually intensifying.

So this is the 4th named storm, I think this is the closest I have ever seen to 2 tropical like systems in the med at the same time, and Debra is in almost exactly the same place as Cristofer. Remarkable.

Indeed it doesn't, since for these systems the centre of the storm passing over you means the worst of the weather. Plus I'm arguing that these are basically tropical storms anyway so practically there is no change in any naming convention.
