Strange day to say the east - forecasted heavy showers with hail, thunder and sleet mixed in - turned out sunny all day! Now 4.1c and rising due to increasing cloud instead of falling under clear skies! When there should have been scattered wintry showers during the day and clearing to leave a cold and frosty night. Instead with have showers approaching later meaning temperatures will rise.

A bit of a washout today. The rain showers weren't remotely sleety, although there was a lot of hail  Whenever the setup is good to drive showers through the Cheshire Gap, you can almost guarantee those showers will be everything but snow here near the coast!

Recent winters have been so terrible that the cold spells have been a pathetic pale imitation of what we used to get.

This is in a different league entirely even compared to those. An embarrassment. It's not even an attempt at a cold spell. Utterly abysmal barely dropping below freezing the past two nights and tonight currently stuck on 2.4C nearly two hours after sunset

All thanks to the disgusting wind that is now ever present no matter what the synoptic set-up. Got lower temperatures earlier in the winter and last May than from this lamentable non-cold spell.

No proper snow either just some hideous wet sleety stuff this morning. Just unreal for that to be coming down from the north at this time of year when last year we got proper heavy snow at the end of April following weeks of warmth and sunshine. 

This is nothing but week 7 of repulsive unappealing dross from this catastrophe of a winter. Horrible

Yeah, I agree. Properly cold air just hasn't reached the bulk of the UK. It's frustrating, because we're sitting under sub -5c 850's, we're the right side of the 528dam line, 2m temp struggling to get much over 2c, yet what's falling has been predominantly rain - even inland. I'm sure we've had snow fall (and settle) on similar parameters. Is the DP currently too high???

The possible snow event tomorrow night into Sunday as that little front moves SSE'wards down the western side of the UK I fear will be a sleety mess - until it gets to the north West Midlands. Then there's more than a chance of the Monday potential snow from the trough disruption falling mostly as sleet or even rain (the last arpege run I saw suggested this)

This could go down as the biggest let-down IMBY since the crapfest that was Feb(?) 2009, when we were forecast a good snow event, but ended up with about 3 hours of freezing rain, which was interesting, but not the 10cm+ of snow if would have been.

I find that a cold NW'ly air stream under fairly high pressure often leads to rain, despite low 850s/thickness. Not sure why or if that's remotely correct - in fact I've also heard that drier air (which you'd expect under higher pressure) allows for snow more readily, but I think that's more associated with a continental air feed lowering dew points more effectively. 

If the wind direction is SE'ly tomorrow evening then we could be in business - but if it is any other direction (or the PPN is very light), then I'd be surprised if we saw anything other than rain. 

Tell me about it - this was meant to be the coldest spell since 2013 yet we failed to even have a sleety flake of snow and looks like we won't even have a proper breakdown!?

Most of the wintry showers came in a streamer and were 10-15 miles west of Exeter - Dartmoor got a good covering! Exeter just got pitiful drizzle and occasional soft hail in heavier bursts.

It's almost 9pm and the temperature is rising under clear skies and this is what I find strange - because I looked at the radar and it's not like there is an approaching shower etc. 2.5C AND RISING IT IS!

if Aberdeen CAN'T GET A decent dump or dusting of snow from a northerly with a sub-zero ice day then what chance do we have here down south?!

Had a rain shower here 4.5c. I'm going to the Brecons tomorrow. There is snow there!

 Should be able to see across the severn. Lived for 8 years at Hawkesbury Upton...

 We have our first light covering of snow of the winter tonight and it's still snowing, very lightly.

  Snow is slipping just to the West/South of here, and the cloud from the system has ruined any chance of a decent frost.

No other chance of snow on the horizon, and back to Atlantic bore feast looking likely what a load of rubbish
