Bit disgusting this morning with dark overcast skies and frequent showery rain all under a strong southerly wind coming in from the Channel. Looking at the radars, it looks like a "shower streamer" is stuck over us at this arse end of Kent - a pity that isn't coming in from the opposite direction.

9.6 C and 6.3 mm of rain had fallen since my last station reset at 11 pm last night. That's on top of the 13.2 mm from yesterday's showers.

Edit: In fact, shortly after I typed this, conditions deteriorated with torrential rain under low cloud thick enough to make it fully night time-dark again. I wish that strong wind would just p*** off. An additional 3 mm fell in that 10 minutes but the wind made it look and feel worse.

6.4C, has been brief heavy showers, about 2.8mm since midnight - they were much worse along the coast trundling towards Scotland late yesterday. Whitby had about 26mm and there was localised flooding as drains failed to cope and/or blocked.

Further heavy rain showers has brought the rain total to 17 mm since 12 am here at Folkestone. Torrential downpours over them thar hills as this 10.30 am radar grab shows is making for a difficult morning for those living there. I wouldn't be surprised if it is in excess of 30 mm at that end - now I know how those living at Lancashire and Cumbria feel like, and this is just a small portion of what they had!

Probably an interesting bit of weather involving convergence and uplifting if you like that kind of thing, but personally I think it's being a disgusting morning so far, especially as that strong southerly wind just won't shift.

Edit: S**t the bed! I can actually see a sliver of blue sky.

indeed persistant showers since late sun evening heavy at times 20mm yesterday and a further 20mm overnite plus further 5 or so this morning , alreday 65mm since the start of year , would have been noteworthy but overshadowed by eastern scotlands misery so has barely had a mention

A further spell of heavy rain has topped it up to 25 mm (since 12 am) dead on here at Folkestone. But it is now finally brightening up properly, enough to turn lights off indoors, as the "shower streamer" start to head northwards via a subtle change in wind direction.

8.7 C under light winds. Feeling and looking a bit more seasonal.

Slack low pressure areas are of no convective use here at this time of year wthout any surface heating or a feed in from a 'warm' sea!

If only it is January . . . Oh, wait. It IS January.   Still, at least the wind had fallen calm now - for a change.
