It got to 27.5C at Greenwich on the 6th May 1862, pretty good for the time of the year. 


Unfortunately that was the warmest day for that year at Greenwich as a very cool summer that followed. The CET for the summer 1862 is 13.8C

It must not be that unusual for May to have the hottest day of the year.
For example it happened here in 2010 (26.2C on the 22nd) and again in 2012 (24.9C on the 28th)

6th May is an auspicious date weather-wise. 6th May 1995 reached (rounded) 29C in Southampton. On the same day 5 years later it reached 25C. The period 5th-10th May strikes me (anecdotally, I admit) as being one of those anomalous spells. Kev- you'd be able to confirm or refute, I'm sure.

Mid May for me. Mid May 1926, 1935, 1955, 1993, 1995 all saw snow falling to low levels. The period of the ice saints, it could happen again.
