It is almost not worthwhile posting anything here today since Storm Brian has been almost a complete non-event here, having just delivered no more than 0.4 mm of rain to Edinburgh Gogarbank during last night up to midnight. That takes yesterday's final total for that site to 1.0 mm which only just makes yesterday an official rain day and no more. On top of that, there has been just a measly 0.6 mm of rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank during the early hours of this morning. Weathercast.co.uk isn't providing us with any rainfall data just now (which means that I can't say how much rain has fallen at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh), so I am currently having to rely on SEPA once again for that data. Nevertheless, the current running totals for Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning and taking a rain day to be one where at least 1.0 mm of rain has fallen, is as follows:
Monthly Total For October: 55.0 mm (Expected), 48.4 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days in October so far: 8.4 (Expected), 13 (Actual)
We have now had 57.3% of our average October rainfall and 101.6% of our average number of rain days in October so far, so this month is currently 12.5% drier than average according to the actual rainfall amounts, but 55.2% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.
2017 Autumn Total: 113.3 mm (Expected), 106.6 mm (Actual)
Number of Rain Days so far this autumn: 18.8 (Expected), 29 (Actual)
We have had 49.3% of our average autumn rainfall so far and 80.1% of our average number of rain days for this autumn so far, so this autumn is currently 5.9% drier than average according to the actual rainfall totals, but 54.4% wetter than average according to the number of rain days.
2017 Yearly Total: 587.8 mm (Expected), 612.8 mm (Actual)
We have had 81.2% of our average annual rainfall so far, so this year is currently 4.3% wetter than average.
It is the fact that we keep on getting those really small totals such as what I have just reported, which are the reason why we have continued to lag behind the long-term 1981-2010 average for the amount of rainfall in this part of the world. This has actually been ongoing since the latter part of August and at that time, I can remember us being close to the average already about two-thirds of the way through August only to then find it a real struggle to be able to officially confirm that as a wetter than average month due to those small daily totals which we were now getting.
In the end, August did end up wetter than average, though only just wetter than average and mainly as a result of what happened during the first two-thirds of that month. That pattern of constantly getting only small daily totals has continued ever since then which means that although we are seeing a lot more actual rain days than normal (yesterday was just a rain day and no more, but the fact that it was a rain day means that this will now go down as a wetter than average month in terms of the number of rain days, regardless of what happens during the rest of the month), we are just not getting enough rain out of that, to allow us to have any more than the average amount of rainfall during each of the autumn months so far.
Occasionally, we do get the odd really wet day but it is only because of those few really wet days that we are getting anything like the average amount of rainfall and were it not for those days, this would have been a very dry autumn so far up until this point in time in this part of the world.
