In the end, a total of 7.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 7.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

However, today has been completely dry so far at both of those stations as at 1pm this afternoon.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 33.0 mm, the total for this spring so far to 152.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 182.8 mm as at 1pm this afternoon.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 30.8 mm, the total for this spring so far to 141.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 172.2 mm as at 1pm this afternoon.

This means that there has now been more rain during this spring than the 1981-2010 spring average at both of those seasons which means that regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month, this spring will now go down as being wetter than average overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. That in turn makes this spring, our wetter than average season at both of those seasons since the summer of 2017.

In the end, a total of 7.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday at Edinburgh Gogarbank, but along with just 2.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

On the other hand, today has been completely dry so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 6am this morning, but with a total of 0.2 mm of rain being recorded for today so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at that same time this morning.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 40.8 mm, the total for this spring so far to 159.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 190.6 mm as at 6am this morning.

This means that just at least another 8.3 mm of rain now needs to fall there between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts with that feat having already been achieved for this spring as a whole.

However, another five official rain days need to occur at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days with at least four more official rain days needing to occur during that same period for that same feat to be achieved for this spring as a whole.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 33.4 mm, the total for this spring so far to 144.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 174.8 mm as at 1pm this afternoon.

This means that at least another four more official rain days need to occur there between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days.

Regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month though, this spring will go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days in addition to it being wetter than average in terms of the actual rainfall amount as there has now been more official rain days there during this spring than the 1981-2010 spring average for that particular station.

In the end, a total of 2.2 mm of rain fell during yesterday Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 2.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that that, a total of 3.0 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning along with 4.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 46.2 mm, the total for this spring so far to 165.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 196.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

This means that at least another 3.1 mm of rain now needs to fall between now and the end of this month at Edinburgh in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts at that particular station with just at least 3 more official rain days needed for this month to also go down as being wetter than average there in terms of the number of official rain days.

In addition to that, just at least two more official rain days need to occur at Edinburgh Gogarbank between now and the end of this month in order for this spring to go down as being wetter than average overall in terms of the number of official rain days (this spring is already wetter than average there in terms of actual rainfall amounts).

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 40.6 mm, the total for this spring so far to 151.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 182.0 mm as at 7am this morning.with just two or more official rain days needed for this month to go down as being wetter than average overall at that particular station in terms of the number of official rain days.

This means that at least another 8.4 mm of rain now needs to fall at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in term of the actual rainfall amounts

This spring is already wetter than average there overall both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of official rain days.

In the end, a total of 5.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 8.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that that, a total of 1.6 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 7am this morning, but with Edinburgh Gogarbank remaining dry so far today as at that same time this morning.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 49.0 mm, the total for this spring so far to 168.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 198.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

This means that since this month's total at that particular station is now exactly bang on the 1981-2010 May average at the time of this report, it is now no longer possible for this month to be drier than average there in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, so any further rainfall which occurs there between now and the end of this month will result in this month being wetter than average overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts at that particular station (this spring is already wetter than average there in that regard).

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 45.8 mm, the total for this spring so far to 156.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 187.2 mm as at 7am this morning.

This means that just at least another 3.2 mm of rain now needs to fall at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in term of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that, this month will now go down as being wetter than average overall at that particular station in terms of the number of official rain days if there are any more official rain days there between the start of tomorrow (since today is already an official rain day there) and the end of this month.

This spring is already wetter than average there overall both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of official rain days.

In the end, a total of 8.8 mm of rain fell during yesterday Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 3.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that that, a total of 1.4 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 8am this morning, along with 0.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 59.2 mm, the total for this spring so far to 178.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 209.0 mm as at 8am this morning.

This means that since there has now been more rain at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this month than the 1981-2010 May average, this month will now go down as a wetter than average month there overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 48.4 mm, the total for this spring so far to 159.0 mm and the total for this year so far to 189.8 mm as at 8am this morning.

This means that just at least another 0.6 mm of rain now needs to fall at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh between now and the end of this month in order for this month to go down as being wetter than average there in term of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that, this month will now go down as being wetter than average overall at both of those stations in terms of the number of official rain days if there are any more official rain days there between now and the end of this month at both of those stations.

This spring is now already wetter than average at both of those stations overall both in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, and in terms of the number of official rain days as there has now been more rain and more official rain days during this spring than the respective 1981-2010 spring average at both of those stations.

In addition to that that, a total of 0.2 mm of rain has been recorded for today so far at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as at 11am this morning, with Edinburgh Gogarbank remaining dry during today so far.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 60.6 mm, the total for this spring so far to 179.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 210.4 mm as at 11am this morning.

At last, we've had a bit of a dowsing yesterday and today. Yesterday's were light showers, with one moderate and enough for frothy puddles to fill up the dips in the road. Overnight there was another splash of sorts then a little more this morning as the warm front pushed north.

In the end, a total of 14.0 mm of rain fell during yesterday Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 17.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. That makes yesterday the wettest day of this month with just today left, and probably the second wettest day of this year so far at both of those stations.

To put that into context and just to show what a difference a year makes, I have just been looking back at my stats for this same month during last year which showed that a total of just 15.4 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during the whole of May 2018 along with 16.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This means that we had more rain during yesterday alone at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh than what we had during the whole of this same month during last year with yesterday's total at Edinburgh Gogarbank falling just short of the total for the whole of last May at that particular station.

In addition to that that, a total of 0.4 mm of rain has fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 7am this morning, along with 0.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes the total for this month so far to 77.4 mm, the total for this spring so far to 196.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 227.2 mm as at 7am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that takes the total for this month so far to 70.6 mm, the total for this spring so far to 181.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 212.0 mm as at 7am this morning.

This month was always going to be wetter than average and indeed, that has turned out to be the case. Until yesterday though, I had looked as though this month wouldn't be all that much wetter than average with this spring's wettest month looking almost certain to be March, rather than this month.

However, the events of the last day or so have meant that this month has actually ended up being far more substantially wetter than average than what it had looked as though it would be just a day or so ago.

Furthermore, more rain is forecast for later on today and with that, the possibly of this month being the wettest month of this spring and of this year so far, can't now be completely ruled out even that was looking very unlikely to be the case just a day or so ago.

Now that we have just entered another new month, I can now confirm that the final total for May comes out as 80.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 72.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 163.3% of the 1981-2010 average for that station whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 148.5% of its 1981-2010 average rainfall during May.

Overall, this shows that May was substantially wetter than average at both of those stations in terms of the actual rainfall amounts. Until just a few days ago, it had looked as though May wouldn't be all that much wetter than average until a very wet end to the month resulted in that month being much wetter than what it had looked as though it would end up being.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 14 official rain days during May and this shows that it was also much wetter than average there overall in terms of the number of official rain days since that amounts to 122.8% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 13 official rain days during May with that amounting to 135.4% of the 1981-2010 average, thus making May a much wetter than average month there overall in terms of the number of official rain days.

As we have also just entered a brand new season, I can also confirm that the final total for this spring was 199.0 mm at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 183.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this is 131.8% of the 1981-2010 average whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 129.8% of its 1981-2010 average during this spring so that for both of these stations, this spring was much wetter than average overall in terms of the actual rainfall amounts.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank had 37 official rain days during this spring which is 112.1% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh had 36 official rain days during this spring which is 127.2% of the 1981-2010 average so that for both of these stations, this spring was much wetter than average overall in terms of the number of official rain days.

Finally, I can also confirm that during 2019 so far, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had a total of 229.8 mm of rain as at midnight going into 1 June 2019 which is 30.5% of the 1981-2010 average, whilst the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had a total of 214.0 mm of rain during 2019 so far as at midnight going into 1 June 2019, which is 30.4% of the 1981-2010 average.

In addition to that, Edinburgh Gogarbank has had 48 official rain days so far during 2019 as at midnight going into 1 June 2019 which is 35.0% of the 1981-2010 average whereas the botanic gardens in Edinburgh has had 44 official rain days during 2019 so far at at midnight going into 1 June 2019 which is 35.4% of the 1981-2010 average.
