I see than Moscow has been having some "proper" cold over the last couple of days, with maxima of around -20. When I first started looking at the European city temperatures in my newspaper around 50 years ago, you might see those sort of temperatures there once every couple of years or so, but they are pretty rare now.

Was just surfing!

I thought Yakutsk or Verkhoyansk was the coldest part of Siberia - But 39 km south east of Oymyakon there is somewhere called Tomtor:

Expecting a high of -60c Tuesday and low of -66c Tuesday night! - People live there as well? Must be a record breaking cold weather for them surely or near it??❄

People live there - FYI? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomtor,_Tattinsky_District,_Sakha_Republic

Yes, it seems that way doesn't it?
However Australia is as big as the USA and the record flooding is mostly no doubt, related to the locality as we have seen there - California, Mid West or East Coast as examples.

La Nina, IOD and SAM have all undoubdtedly played their part but it has been horrendous. Driving over there last November and looking at Google Maps, I would say in the worst flood affected areas of VIC, 50% of the roads were closed by flooding, and those reopened make our potholes pale into insignificance in general.

Mammoth Lakes has had 650cm of snow so far this season already(think annual average is 500cm or so) with massive totals expected in the coming days from the storm moving in shortly.

Worth remembering that it’s not just California that’s been affected and that the areas hit are, I think, akin to mush of the U.K. being hit.

Seem a record amount of rain nearly 6 inches in 1 location in Famagusta region today.   Very funny the first video showing 2 Cypriots canoeing down the river alike flowing on the road.  Sadly the red soil which good for crops had washed away to the sea to become red sea.

Probably not a 1 in a 100 year event this time but not far off it I imagine. This time it's the turn of Queensland specifically the central north coast, around the Whitsundays / Hamilton Island for those that know it.

Many places in the area have had over 500mm in the last 3 and a half days, Proserpine is up over 750mm in the same time, and likely to be a fair bit over 1 metre of rain in 5 or 6 days by the time the system moves off the coast, on Wednesday.

Already more than we have in a year down here... in 4 days.

I was just reviewing recent weather in Svalbard and it's been exceptionally mild again. It used to be that you would see a couple of days where the temperature reached or exceeded freezing point from December to March. In the last 30 days it has done that 11 times!

In contrast: “China: Northern city of Mohe reports coldest temperature”

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-64378176

“China's northernmost city, Mohe, has recorded its lowest temperature since records began.

Mohe - known as "China's North Pole" - is in the province of Heilongjiang, close to the Russian border.

On Sunday, its local meteorological station recorded a record-low temperature of -53C (-63F) at 7am. The previous coldest temperature on record in the city was -52.3C, in 1969.

However, the temperature is still shy of China's national record.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in China is -58C, in the city of Genhe, Inner Mongolia in December 2009.”
