Interesting numbers this year of High Arctic freezing days. Seems to be unusual and out of sync. with recent years but in line this year with increased early ice extent.

Thinking about the Arctic, how do you see or explain the much reduced ice thaw days this year (earlier post) in relation to the 'more extremes in all directions' and more meridional synoptics which is behind that position?

I am not suggesting that global cooling has started - there is no evidence to support that, but if a trend in the Arctic of reduced ice thawing develops, then we should take notice. Meanwhile like the extreme high temperatures in Perth, it is worth noting - and in these times, imo, is totally unexpected.

Interesting.......

selected excerpts ......

This week much of the Alps and the Pyrenees have experienced similar conditions: "best snow ever," I hear all around me; "it's dumping down!" others cry.

Record Snowfall. It's not every day you start the ski season with what's reaching record snowfall levels for this time of year. It seems we are being rewarded for having to hang up our planks last season, as ski resorts around Europe locked down.

and ......According to The Chamoniarde, Chamonix Mountain Prevention and Relief Society, France's world-famous freeride destination, that's just over 90km by road from Crans Montana, has not seen snowfall like this since 1966:

Alaska sets record high December temperature of 19.4C

Alaska.

Quote: Arctic 'Icemageddon' warning follows heat record.

The coldest US state of Alaska has recorded its hottest-ever December day, amid an unusual winter warm spell.

Temperatures soared to a record 19.4C (67F) on the island of Kodiak on Sunday - almost seven degrees warmer than the state's previous high.

But elsewhere in Alaska temperatures have been plunging to record lows.

In the south-eastern town of Ketchikan, temperatures dropped to -18C (-0.4F) on 25 December - one of the town's coldest Christmas Days in the past century.

The weather extremes have prompted warnings of an "Icemageddon" from authorities, as torrents of rain and snow have left ice as hard as cement coating the roads.

The high temperatures of about 16C, forecast for today deserves a mention here.

I think I remember, in the early 50's when in January? a maximum temperature of 55F was reached in London and broke previous records.

(CNN)After months of extreme drought that triggered water shortages and stoked wildfires, heavy snow is falling in the Sierra Nevada -- enough to break decades-old records.

As of Tuesday, more than 202 inches of snow -- nearly 17 feet (5.2 meters) -- had fallen so far this month at the University of California, Berkeley's Central Sierra Snow Laboratory, at Donner Pass east of Sacramento.

Scientists at the lab said this month is now the snowiest December on record for the location and the third snowiest month overall. The top month was January 2017 when 238 inches (6 meters) fell, and it's not likely enough snow will fall in the next three days to challenge that record. Records here go back to 1970.
Lab officials said the snow was "deep and hard to get through," and it took them roughly 40 minutes to get to where the measurements are taken just 150 feet away from the lab's front door.

Huge wildfires in Colorado, another event that seems to be ocurring out of season.

The Twitter video is quite surreal, people still calmly pushing their shopping trolleys around as if they were just going to get in their cars and drive home as normal.
Better than panicing I guess.
