There's not much rain around today, but parts of the far south and SW of England might see a bit of rain during tonight and into tomorrow from that same weather front which brought us all such a wet day during yesterday as a small wave disturbance forms and moves along it.

For the rest of the UK and Ireland, there are likely to still be some showers around, especially as you get closer to the NW quarter of the UK.

Because of that, I thought that it would be a good idea to start this thread just in case some of you have anything to report from that.

Because September 2022 was wetter than average here in terms of the actual rainfall amounts, we would then tend to expect this month (and probably, the month after that as well at the very least) to be substantially substantially drier than average if this year's overall pattern was to continue.

However, that just gets a bit boring after a while and had that continued to be the case, I would have just this thread for someone else to start as a result.

However, there are some sings on the latest model output that we might now be finally but gradually, coming out of that predominately dry pattern of weather at long last, and that we might actually be finally in the process of actually making up that huge rainfall deficit which has built up over the last year or so.

Because that is such a big change, it might not all happen overnight, so there could still be some drier periods during this month at times. However, the latest model outputs tends to be pointing towards a fairly wet month overall, and that is enough for me to regaining my own interest in that, at least for the time being.

However all of this pans out in your area though, this is the very place to report those all important rainfall figures.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, we have to look at the raw BUFR/SYNOP data and that only goes up to 11am BST (10:00 UTC) this morning. However, this shows that a further 1.2 mm of rain had fallen at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh during that hour.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank and the botanic gardens in Edinburgh are as follows:

Data For Recent Days

As at 2pm BST (13:00 UTC) this afternoon, a total of 3.0 mm of rain had now fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 10am BST (09:00 UTC) along with 3.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 31.4 mm (38.0% of 1991-2020 October average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 23.8 mm (31.4% of 1991-2020 October average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

This has been a wet start to this month, but this month is the wettest month of the year on average according to the 1990-2020 averages, so actually getting a wetter than average month overall might not be as straightforward as it may seem.

Unlike in other recent months though, there are no signs of any extended drier periods on the horizon according to the latest model output, so there is a good chance that we might finally end up breaking our long run of months with a below average number of official rain days.

Seasonal Data

Total for this Autumn so far: 107.6 mm (50.9% of 1991-2020 Autumn average) at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 98.8 mm (50.4% of 1991-2020 Autumn average) at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh
