The Amber warning yesterday was for north-west England and North Wales. Clearly Lothian was the wettest area in the UK, which includes a capital city struggling with flooding. With hindsight an Amber warning should have been issued

I'll post Swanston's 48hr total later today

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 10AM BST (09:00 UTC yesterday morning: 35.8 mm
Total since 10AM BST (09:00 UTC yesterday morning: 44.8 mm (as at 07:20 AM BST (06:20 UTC) this morning on Friday 24
May 2024)

For the second day in a row, this makes yesterday our wettest day of the year so far and this all adds up to a total of 80.6 mm in the space of just the last two days which is 160.7% of the 1991-2020 average rainfall for the entire month of May (that is more than one and a half times that average).

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 98.4 mm (196.1% of 1991-2020 May average)
Number of rain days during this month so far: 7 (65.1% of 1991-2020 May average)
Number of dry days during this month so far: 12

This means that at least another 4 official rain days now need to be recorded between now and the end of this month in order for this month
to go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Seasonal Data

Total for this spring so far: 310.8 mm (209.3% of 1991-2020 spring average)
Number of rain days during this spring so far: 33 (109.1% of 1991-2020 spring average)
Number of dry days during this spring so far: 33

This means that during this spring so far, we have now had more than twice our 1991-2020 spring average rainfall.

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 437.0 mm (55.7% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of rain days during this year so far: 60 (43.7% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of dry days during this year so far: 50

An update on the incredible rainfall in south Edinburgh. 146.2mm in 48hrs!! Yesterday recorded Swanston's wettest ever 24hrs (68.4mm) and today's 0900 GMT superceded that at around 77.8mm!! Phenomenal!!!

The May total is now approaching 300% of normal at 176mm 😲

My report above is from a UK capital city, yet no coverage on the national news. Not even an Amber warning.....I find that so irritating ☹️

The feature that brought this rain - a vigorous low that formed over Central Europe then moved NNW'wards up the UK's East Coast/North Sea before veering more WNW'wards - strokes me as being extremely unusual.

Have I got that right?

If so, can any of our experts explain the mechanisms that created this set-up? (I obviously have zero idea)

Luckily though, it's just heavy showers which we are getting now rather than the persistent rain of the last couple ofdays.

Nevertheless, those showers are still very heavy at times and have become more frequent with some fairly bright echoes showing up on the latest radar map just to the south of Edinburgh.

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

24 hour total up to 10AM BST (09:00 UTC this morning: 17.0 mm
Total since 10AM BST (09:00 UTC this morning: 1.2 mm (as at 07:40 PM BST (18:40 UTC) this evening on Monday 27 May 2024)

The total for today so far might surprise a lot of people given how wet it's been recently but today's showers have largely avoided here and Edinburgh Gogarbank even largely missed out on the big downpour which we had this morning.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 131.4 mm (261.9% of 1991-2020 May average)
Number of rain days during this month so far: 11 (102.2% of 1991-2020 May average)
Number of dry days during this month so far: 12

Today's totals as given above may well be much lower than expected, but that is still enough to mean that more official rain days have now been recorded during this month than the 1991-2020 May average and so regardless of what happens between now and the end of this month, this month will now go down as being wetter than average in terms of the number of rain days.

Seasonal Data

Total for this spring so far: 343.8 mm (231.5% of 1991-2020 spring average)
Number of rain days during this spring so far: 37 (122.3% of 1991-2020 spring average)
Number of dry days during this spring so far: 33
