This morning, we're back to the usual mostly cloudy start to today here in Edinburgh with only the odd bright or sunny interval and a temperature of around 13°C.

In addition to that, today's temperature forecasts have been downgraded by the BBC/Meteogroup and the Met Office by quite a bit which should come as no surprise given how much they have overestimated our temperatures over the last couple of days.

These forecasts were previously predicting a maximum of around 23°C for today, but any forecast for those sorts of temperatures has now been put back until tomorrow, which now raises the question of whether or not, we will ever actually see those sorts of temperatures here any time soon.😡

EDIT:

I  can now see that there is actually plenty of blue sky around but rather frustratingly, it's just not in the right place just now to deliver any decent sunshine.🤢

Just hit 18C, with clear blue skies, strong sunshine (even at this time of day, you can definitely feel it) and, of course, no wind. Typical summer Sheppey weather!

Currently 18.2, dew 13.5, with the high so far also being 18.2.

Last night's low was 11.5.

EDIT: 20.2 now, it's going to be a very warm day!

Since John's post earlier the amount of blue sky has increased and it is mostly sunny at long last. Struggling to reach 17 C though so whether we will reach 20 C still remains to be seen 😎

In the winter, that often prevents a frost at night even under clear skies and so, it is easy to see why that will also prevent the temperatures from rising all that much during the day at this time of the year as well unless that is a hot wind from the south.

At the moment, it's just an Atlantic air mass which we're under just now and although the Atlantic Ocean is warmer than average just now, it is still relatively cool at this time of year compared to the land (in winter, that would be a mild direction which is why that prevents us from getting a frost then but at this time of year, it's the other way around).

This means that too much wind from that direction will clearly prevent the temperature from rising which means that in order for us to get some decent temperatures into the 20s°C then either we need that wind to go away, or it needs to back more towards the south so that it's coming from a hotter continental source (our highest temperatures of the year have sometimes occurred when it's been windy, but with a hot southerly).

That is why the temperature here in Edinburgh is still only around 18°C despite all the sunshine. Having said that, it can be very deceiving as well because that sunshine is very strong at this time of year and unless you have the proper protection against that, it will still burn you if you're out in it for too long, even if it's not actually all that warm.

Definitely living up to our reputation of being on the sunniest south coast this afternoon. Unbroken sunshine for a couple of hours now despite lots of cloud visible to the north over the mainland 😂

24C to the northern end of the island around 22.5C towards town at the other end.

Warmest day of the year here, for the second day in a row. Unbroken sunshine - it feels okay in the shade, with the odd puff of wind, hot in the direct sun and stifling upstairs!

23.8, dew 15.5, the high so far also being 23.8.

27.4 upstairs, and that's with the windows open. 👎

My phone app is saying that it's 21°C here in Edinburgh just now and even according to the official raw BUFR/SYNOP data, a temperature of exactly bang on 20.0°C was recorded at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh a short while ago which means that Edinburgh will technically record a 20+°C maximum temperature for today.

However, all of my final statistics reports and precipitation reports on this forum always just use the data from Edinburgh Gogarbank and as I write, the temperature there has still been no higher than around 19°C.

This means that the wait for that elusive first 20+°C maximum since the very first day of this month is likely to go on after today and it's so frustrating now to get so close to that and yet never quite actually getting there despite today's sunshine.😡

A temperature of19.9°C has just been recorded at Edinburgh and since the actual maximum temperature is usually always higher than the highest recorded temperature, it is now looking as though we might finally have that first official 20+°C maximum since 1 June 2024 at Edinburgh Gogarbank at long last!!

If we do achieve that, my sense of celebration for that will come only second to anything which might result from a Scotland victory in tonight's match in the Euros.

However, that's not a done deal just yet as it is always possible that the actual maximum could end up just being exactly the same as the highest recorded temperature. That would be a massive frustration if that ended up being the case.

Incidently, the highest temperature at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh as I write is 20.13°C, so no problems with getting that 20+°C maximum there.

Today's maximum temperature at Edinburgh Gogarbank is now confirmed as 20.4°C so at long, long last, we finally have our first 20+°C maximum since 1 June 2024 in the bag and that of course, also makes today our second warmest day of this summer so far.

Managed a modest 21.4 C at 12.25 pm despite near unbroken sunshine the whole day. Felt quite fresh in the shade (eg, that ASDA "wind tunnel" part of the town's shopping area) but I have sat outside at my famed west-facing front garden in the afternoon.

A typical summer's morning here - clear, calm, rather warm.

13.3, dew 12.2, suggesting that the dewpoint will rise sharply later. The low so far is 13.1 and yesterday's high was 24.7, warmest of the year so far.

17.5c and calm.  A strange half and half sky with a bank of thick cloud just clearing off to our East, leaving a completely clear sky.

Yesterday maxed at 24.8c with very little cloud.

As expected, the dewpoint has been rising as quickly as the air temperature... still full sun, of course, and no wind, and it's now 17.6, dew 16.8 - the highest dewpoint of the year so far, and up to "high summer" levels of years gone by.
