Now that we've entered into another brand new month, it's time to start a brand new thread although the old thread is still available for members to post their final rainfall totals for last month.

As for this month, members can now post their all important totals for this month if they have anything to report for that.

Here in Edinburgh, this summer has started off on a much drier note after the exceptionally wet spring and during last month, we had less than half of our 1991-2024 June average rainfall.

That is at least one of the three main factors which make up a decent summer, which has actually gone quite well so far even though this hasn't actually been much of a summer so far as the fact that last month was drier than average has been the only decent aspect of this summer so far.

The big question now is whether the dry theme will continue during this month (preferably with some actual decent summer weather), or whether this month will end up being more unsettled and therefore wetter.

The latest models are indicating that this will depend on where you are in the UK but tend to be going for an Atlantic driven and westerly dominated month, but with the Azores high possibly ridging into the south of England at times.

This would suggest a drier than average month ahead in the south of England but a wetter than average month ahead in the north and west of the UK including the vast majority of Scotland.

For here in Edinburgh and SE Scotland in general, the models are going for our rainfall totals for this month to be close to the 1991-2020 July average which would be enough to keep the overall dry theme going for this summer.

Regardless of how all of this pans out though, this is the very place for posting those all important rainfall totals for this month in your area.

I don't normally post on here unless an official rain day (a day with 1.0 mm or more of rain) has been recorded at Ediinburgh Gogarbank because to me, anything less than that means that nothing is really happening in that regard which is all really worth reporting but even when that doesn't happen, I will still give an occasion update on here anyway.

We've had about 38mm in past 24 hours taking month to 57.4mm.
July is often quite wet in the form of thundery periods, the average is on the high side for here at 70mm.
This recent deluge was poorly forecast as recently as 7am yesterday Met Office showed rain dying out by 1pm and largely dry evening but in fact there were outbreaks of thundery rain from 5pm until 4am

The latest rainfall data for Edinburgh Gogarbank is as follows:

Data For Recent Days

Total since 10 am BST (09:00 UTC) yesterday morning: 6.4 mm (as at 7:00 am BST (06:00 UTC) this morning on Wednesday 10 July 2024)

That makes yesterday our wettest day of this  month so far.

Monthly Data

Total for this month so far: 15.6 mm (21.7% of 1991-2020 July average)
Number of rain days during this month so far: 5 (43.9% of 1991-2020 July average)
Number of dry days during this month so far: 2

Despite yesterday's rainfall, it continues to become even drier here than in the rest of the UK and once we get the next day or so out of the way, the outlook according to the latest model outlook then looks drier here once again.

As a result, this month still continues to look set to finish up being drier than average here overall, thus continuing the dry summer here.

Seasonal Data

Total for this summer so far: 49.6 mm (23.0% of 1991-2020 summer average)
Number of rain days during this summer so far: 14 (41.5% of 1991-2020 summer average)
Number of dry days during this summer so far: 16

Annual Data

Total for this year so far: 542.2 mm (69.1% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of rain days during this year so far: 80 (58.2% of 1991-2020 annual average)
Number of dry days during this year so far: 68
