I awoke at 1.30 and it was snowing moderately herd here on the valley floor.

By daybreak the hills where white with 5cm reported. There was a patchy dusting at my location but none on tarmaced surfaces.

These images show perfectly the effect on a tiny bit of elevation.

Hilltop is around 130m asl and the snowline was maybe half that. Just 200 feet made all the difference.

After my early premature moan, the sleet has turned to snow and is giving a nice little covering here.

An unexpected bonus. :-)

Snowing again in the Lakes tonight. Big flakes coming down gently and settling on previous snow and bare ground. 6th day of snow up here, been up Crinkle Crags today, depth was 1-3 feet!

There still isn't any snow here in Edinburgh (although we have had a lot of frost over the last couple of days) when I looked outside my kitchen window this morning, I did notice that there is a dusting of snow on the top of the Pentland Hills. Believe or not, this is only the first occasion during this entire winter where there has been any snow on the Pentland Hills, but I can only assume that this must have been as a result of some snow which fell there during last night at around the time when pdiddy had reported on yesterday's CC thread that it had been raining here in Edinburgh.

That is further backed up by the fact that according to the radar maps, there was a period of time during last night when there was some showers nearby which broke up just as they reached Edinburgh with no actual recorded rainfall from that here as a result, but nevertheless would have been responsible for delivering that dumping of snow on the top of the Pentland Hills.

Been  snowing here in Medway for the last 20 mins or so, decent size flakes at times and starting to settle, don't think it will amount to much but nice to see having missed out on Tuesday when everyone else all around me was getting it

Just seen a handful of flakes fall. Phil Avery on a couple of early morning forecasts mentioned that the Downs could see a dusting of snow today, and from the radar it looks as though the precip. giving snow as reported from SE Essex could be heading for east Kent, so the hills in the Canterbury area could see some snow.

Edited to add: Jonesy posted a report while I was composing mine.

I will add though, that this isn't just happening because we're right on the coast because at the end of the day, you need to be getting some form of precipitation in order for that to be falling as snow. The fact that as at 11am this morning, just 37.8 mm of rain has been recorded during this winter so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 33.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh shows that we're not even getting that and of course, it's not possible for it to snow here if there isn't even any precipitation around for that to then fall as snow.

This month is even worse still in this department because so far this month, a total of just 4.0 mm of rain has been recorded at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 11am, along with 6.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh. Since this is normally one of our wettest periods of the year (as was shown last year when last January was last winter's only wetter than average month), I am in doubt that this month is likely to go down as one of our driest Januarys on record if not the driest January on record.

This lack of precipitation in this area has been an on-going virtually constant problem here since last May and with that also incorporating last summer's droughts. I won't go into that here since that is off topic for this particular thread. However, the bottom line is that we need to get back to getting some form of precipitation here before we can then start to concern ourselves about whether or not, this might end up falling as snow.
