It's frustrating that certain posters are able to constantly plough through their agenda in the MO thread, yet when they're challenged on this, the Mods/Brian delete the posts calling out the agenda-driven posts.

Yes. Today reminds me of the weeks of frustrating weather we had here a year ago. The radar has looked the same for hours. Nothing is getting any closer as anything coming from the east just fizzles out completely as it passes Manchester as if there someone standing there with a giant blow torch destroying anything that comes close.

I think I'm at that 'ready for spring' stage now.

horribly grey and dank here in Chi.. the snow has virtually all disappeared and not expecting to see any more, anytime soon, although I'm not ruling it out totally for the rest of the winter. No doubt the Downs did better but am at work so can't bunk off up there! On a more positive note, we did have a couple of cm's last night.. and I was able to go out for a walk in it.. delightful! But these days, we are lucky if we get 1 snow event like that in a whole winter.. and when we do, the snow seems to last on the ground barely 12 hours. Still, I suppose more realism is required, given our low lying, close to coast location.

We've had the type of winter weather I despise today.

Not cold enough for snow; but cold enough to annoy with drizzly precipitation why alot of areas get snow

A complete dead loss here today, a slight slushy dusting had managed to accumulate overnight but the thaw today quickly saw that off, plus the remnants of Tuesday's meagre fall which had just managed to cling on by the skin of its teeth in the shadier spots in the garden. Pathetic!

Well I have to concur with Darren. I'm glad for those on the high ground and the localised parts of the South  and South West but it's been as about a bad a winter's day here as you can get. Cold, max 3C, windy and basically wet with a mixture of rain and sleety snow. Did I mention dark? Not been good for Kent and East Anglia.

Still can't, complain because we usually get the best of it as we did with the beast last year.

Here's the picture that tells a thousand words about how utterly awful this abysmal winter has been:

That is what we have had all week here and today yet again it inexplicably remained dry all day long. When I think about how much snow we used to get even in the less snowy winters it makes me mad

This winter wouldn't have been as bad if we hadn't had the SSW and so much potential, it would just have joined the long list of miserable winters since the internet weather forum era started in 2001.

But the persistent promises from the normally reserved MetO really had us all convinced that severe cold was on the way.

Next week is the exact opposite of the early February weather that was predicted just 2 weeks ago, however, if you turn your computer upside down its much better with high pressure at the top and low pressure underneath exactly in line with the MetO forecast!

Most notable moan of all in this part of the world (Hampshire) was that thousands of people were sent home from work early on Thursday after the met office warning was sent to hundreds of organisations, millions of pounds of business were lost and in the end a little sleet and wet snow fell, the infrastructure remained unaffected, the next day everybody returns to work, the warnings  were lifted at 11am as the snow began to fall and the afternoon/evening turned into total chaos with our busiest motorways at a standstill and still no warnings for hours were issued.

Anyway looking back on the winter that so far has delivered, one fall of snow that our met office did not predict, 3 frosts , I would say the wk term has failed , but not As badly as our met office....not our finest winter and not the finest hour of our met office.

I’m really pleased some people have had snow but I’m soooo jealous!  We are still completely snowless here.  We’ve missed out yet again!  The most we’ve seen this winter is the odd flurry of dry snow yesterday. Not even enough to give us a dusting!

I hope Richard hasn't looked at this mornings ECM, on the 12th the Isobar over Aberdeen stretches right back to the Gambia in North Africa! Lol

With the Cairngorm frone effect he is looking at 17c, real BBQ weather.

Moan from me - the most tiresome thing this winter has been the obsession (actual obsession), with media long range forecasts, especially the MetO. Especially as we know full well how difficult/nigh-on possible it is to forecast the weather at such a range. Makes me wonder why they bother.

These forecasts are only as good as the medium/long range models which are used to support them. If they’re wrong, so are the forecasts.

Is it over yet ?

A beautiful day today with unbroken sunshine and the first 'feel' like things are on the turn.

Its just a shame its only early February and we will no doubt have to endure another 4 to 6 weeks of something resembling endless autumn down here on the SE coast where it hasn't snowed more than 2cm in the last 6 years.

19th January was the day winter ended down here IMBY...the day all hopes of some tasty eastern delight was snatched away in favour of a cold NW'ly unsettled pattern.

A great couple of weeks for many and I'm pleased many got the snowfall they so crave. A zonal NW'ly flow here is cold miserable existence with rain and some transitory sleet / wet snow if you're very lucky...

Woeful, simply woeful.

Global warming has now made it very difficult to get snow laying at sea level. The snowline settles around 80 to 100 metres these days in marginal (normal) winter setups.

30 years when things were a degree or so cooler there was no such marginality most of the time.

Genuine question - does climate change mean :

a) we aren’t getting as many cold synoptic setups as we used to?

Or

b) Synoptic patterns haven’t changed, but when we do get cold setups, they aren’t as cold as they used to be, giving a higher risk of sleet/rain in more marginal setups.

I’m hoping it’s a) , - this gives me hope we could enter a more favourable phase within our lifetimes. Of course many could argue we haven’t done badly since 2009 anyway - there have just been some very unlucky locations, including Folkestone and Aberdeen!
