Ah, the "Basingstoke Snow Event".  The chap I used to work with (In Newbury) used to go on about it and it led to quite a lot of piss take.  It was a very local event, but even Newbury suffered a bit with that one - took me an hour and a half to travel 7 miles that evening !

Just been watching a fireworks display and falling snow at the same time. That's a first for me, although given the farcical situation with fireworks now being let off throughout the course of the year, it was bound to happen sooner or later. 

Took me 5 hours to do two 2 miles!

Unbelieveable It's bad enough reading about Basingstoke, 50 miles away getting a foot of snow, but several inches when it's ten miles away? here's my snow report: NONE AT ALL

Ah, silly me, no I'm in northeast England at the moment - its raining apparently back in Portsmouth.

You're in Chineham, which is the low end of Basingstoke. My colleague is in Hatch Warren and they had 20cm when it was getting dark, hence my estimate. RAF Odiham officially has 19cm according to BBC Weather earlier.

Snow has stopped here now, by the way, after pretty much 24 hours of it falling! It's disappointing it wasn't a bit colder here; it's been above freezing throughout with the exception of a few minutes at 0.0C overnight last night.

We still have light snow falling here but heavy stuff has passed - about 5cm or so I reckon, which compacted as it came down due to marginal conditions. The rain to snow switch earlier was quite sudden and seemed to be a case of the further east I got the earlier it turned to snow.

Not bad for a set up that 'never' delivers for the south, albeit not the deep and crisp and even of last years easterly

Meanwhile around 4 inches has fallen this evening here on south tyne side - perhaps more up the bank.

I don't have a ruler to hand but the snow depth is about length of my phone which is 13.5cm.. the snow is about 0.5cm taller. 

I know it's hard to gauge from the pic above it's give an idea of thickness.

Here's where we ended up - this is the ICON's snowcover map as of 1 AM this morning. I'm in one of the white, no-snow areas of course!

Well I would not take much notice of this map. Totally inaccurate. It has me with 7cm of snow which is a massive understatement.

Snow is still melting in my rain gauge although the heater is doing a decent job. Total so far is 25.0mm. Not sure how high it will get. It is not often I record a total over 20mm and very rare for that to be all snow.

In in SW London, we had sleet /snow mix which didn’t settle so it is showing a covering where there isn’t any.

So appears it is inaccurate both ways, falsely showing lying snow, and underrecording in others.

Woke up to a very thin snowcover on most surfaces from last night's snow showers.
