There is a good deal less snow in the local park than up the hill a little (albeit 55m or so!) at home but it still looks nice and was fine for sledging.

Aberdeen & Basingstoke; emphasises what your satellite picture showed Doc.

Although I'm a loser locally, with just a couple of cm and now mostly gone, this was a nationwide few days of event.

Count as historic?

I'm not sure I would call it historic but it'll do. Mustn't grumble and all that. Hopefully it won't be the last of the winter. (Note to self: Don't look at the model output )

I have just been out to measure the snow in the garden and interestingly after the late morning snow the depth here has increased marginally from yesterday (by millimetres) and is at time of writing just under 9 centimetres level depth. Due to the lack of wind there has been no appreciable drifting against surfaces.

I will be lucky if it is 9mm deep this time tomorrow!

That's a great photo Rob. It kinda makes model watching worthwhile when you get a result like this.

The years are ebbing by..my kids are now 12 and 10. Another winter passes. The sledge gathers more dust in the shed. I could drive 40 odd miles to see some but its never the same. Its been 6 years now since they've witnessed anything greater than 3cm around here.

Another couple of years and they'll be too old to want to go out sledging with their old Dad.

This winter has hurt.

Snow cover lasting much better today. The overnight frost helped to freeze the snow and it is now lasting well (what we have left), guessing dew point must be lower. Over the top of the downs still full cover, deep snow in places and stunning azure blue sky, beautiful......

The sun sets on the snow at the wolf centre, near Reading, a few minutes ago. I'm glad I went there yesterday, I got to see Detling Hill in Kent looking like a picture postcard in the snow (complete with abandoned cars for added effect ) and then there was the snow in Berkshire. Crunchy, beautiful and much enjoyed by the wolves.

It all seems like a million miles away from the dull muddy greens here in coastal Kent!

 

EDIT: And here's the same area yesterday - there's been some melt, but it's still generally covered!

Yes still 12cm or so in places on the common and crystal clear skies. Such a shame the rain is coming tonight to wash it away.

It's a stunning photo but it hurts when you don't have it. We had an inch that was washed away the next day. We drove to Tring with my two boys 3 and 5 and they complained it was too cold after 10 mins of sledging lol. But its true its not the same when it u have to go looking.

That satellite image shows how lucky i am to have lying snow compared to the surroundings, a slither of white to the north of Leeds. The image shows the main story well, snow for central southern England into parts of the SW .

Snow is thawing rapidly now it is overcast and 3c.

Overall it has been an interesting spell of weather since last week with plenty of snow opportunities.
Monday - snow showers from the NW
Tuesday - Band of rain/sleet/snow pushing SE
Wednesday - snow showers from NW
Thursday/Friday/Saturday - band of snow pushing across the south
Thursday/Friday/Saturday - snow showers moving in from the NE

So whilst i managed 2-3cm snow only, it stayed around for 3 days and i got to experience an exceptionally cold day on Thursday . Winter finally arrived.

I would rate the spell 5/10 overall not on my own snow depths but on wintry weather generally and the variety of snow opportunities.

great picture and post, Rob...I am amazed..we are probably 50 mins or so driving distance from Basingstoke from Chichester..what a contrast in the weather between the 2 places! I had to go up to London, yesterday.On the train, only a smattering of snow left here in Chi/ Arundel....Interestingly no snow in  Horsham up to Gatwick, and most snow was at Redhill up to Coulsdon on North Downs and back to a smattering for Croydon and south London...Must be unusual for Horsham and Gatwick to miss out.

Many thanks for posting this Rob. Inspired me to take my eldest son (almost 5) the 20 miles or so from Kings Worthy (last of the snow thawing fast) to Crabtree Plantation in Basingstoke, probably very near your shot. Even today, a tremendous depth of lying snow and lots of great sledging to be had. Only spent an hour or so there, but well worth the effort to see the joy on his face. 

Yes an inch or 2 of fresh this morning to give everything a coating again.(we only got a few dustings but have achieved 6days snow cover).  I fear the worst for tonight's, as my phone says rain only, was hoping for another inch or two before it washes away.

Snow almost all gone washed away by the overnight rain.

A great two weeks of winter weather although nothing exceptional.

When you get such a sparkling blue sky day after heavy snow it makes up for the lack of deep cold sometimes.

Yes same here, yesterday we still had around 4" of lying snow but the rain has washed all bar a few snowmen away.

About 2 inches left in the garden this morning after the rain, expecting it to be all green when I get home tonight. What a surprise fall tho, just shows yet again that despite all the computers and the boffins at the met, snow is a nightmare to forecast.
