The vast majority of you out there will probably not need me to tell you that we are currently in a very unsettled spell of weather just now with England and Wales bearing the biggest brunt of that at the moment. There has also been a little bit of rain here in Edinburgh as well, though not to the same extent just lately.

It has stopped raining here just now, but it was raining at midnight which means that a total of 0.2 mm of rain has already fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 1am this morning along with 0.2 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this already brings the total for this month to 0.2 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 82.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 640.2 mm as at 1am this morning.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this already brings the total for this month to 0.2 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 79.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 616.6 mm as at 1am this morning.

The fact that we are currently in this unsettled spell makes it more important for this thread to be created as quickly as possible so that members can post their early reports for this month without any delay. As a result of us being in this spell of weather, I would therefore also expect this thread to be fairly busy, at least to begin with.

There are a few hints amongst the models that we could move more towards high pressure later on this month. If that happens, it will then be likely to be drier which would then result in this thread becoming a bit quieter. However this month pans out though, this will now be the very place to post those all important reports.

There has been no further additions to today's rainfall total at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh since my last report on this thread, but a total of 1.0 mm of rain has now fallen during today so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now takes the total for this month to 1.0 mm, the total for this autumn to 83.6 mm and the total for this year so far to 641.0 mm.

In my last report here, I mentioned that a total of 1.0 mm of rain had been recorded for this month so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank and since we haven't had any rain here since then apart from a brief shower during yesterday which wasn't enough to produce any measurable rainfall, that is still the case.

However, that is only the case according to the "unofficial" means that I use to provide this data which is to just use the data for each calendar day. That works well for most of the year, but has its flaws when it comes to the change of the clocks to and from BST as this then produces a day with 23 hours when the clocks go forward in the spring, and with 25 hours in the autumn when the clocks go back. That is why the official means of reporting this data is based on UTC which isn't affected in any way by the change of the clocks and which therefore, results in the length of each day remaining the same all the way through the year.

On that note, I then went to www.meteomanz.com which is the same website which I now use to obtain the actual minimum and maximum temperatures for each day at Edinburgh Gogarbank which I then report on each day's CC thread. According to that site, there has actually been no recorded rainfall at Edinburgh Gogarbank during this month so far, and I even know why this is the case.

The official way of reporting data (as I have been reminded before on this forum) is use the time of 09:00 UTC as the benchmark for reporting any rainfall data, which for here in the UK and the Republic of Ireland is 9am during the winter months and 10am when BST (known as IST in the Irish Republic as far as I am aware) is in effect. Officially, it is only data which is recorded either on or after that time on any given day which is considered to be part of that day's data with anything which is recorded before that time, being considered to be part of the previous day's data.

In the case of this month's rainfall, all of the rainfall which I reported for Edinburgh Gogarbank was recorded before 10am on yesterday morning so that despite the fact that this rainfall did occur during yesterday, it is actually part of the previous day's data which in the case, is the data for 30 September 2019. Since that is also part of the previous month of September, this means that this month has technically speaking, actually been completely dry so far at Edinburgh Gogarbank (the same is probably true at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh which publishes its own official data for each month on its own website at the beginning of the following month).

With that in mind, I am now in the process of modifying my own system for reporting this data here and on the daily CC threads so that this more official means of reporting data is taken into consideration. That has resulted in me having to do a bit of reprogramming on my own part, but I am now very close to having a system in place which will work on this basis.

That is probably still not going to be something which I will claim to be official in any way, but this does mean that what I report will then at least be much closer to what the actual official data for my three local stations ends up being.

Before I post my latest report, I would just like to take this moment to confirm that I have now employed a new system for doing so which I had already said on this thread, is based on any observation day starting at 09:00 UTC in line with official Met Office guidelines, rather than at the start of each calendar day in local time (which was how I was doing that before).

This report will the first one to use this new system and I will also add that I am now exclusively using SEPA for this data, rather than weathercast.co.uk as I get data from further back in time from there which has then allowed me to catch up with this data from scratch for the entire year.

Under my new system and despite the fact that today is Friday, the data for 9am this morning (local time, BST) was technically actually the last data for yesterday (Thursday), so it is only any new data which comes in from now on that will officially be part of today's data.

With that out of the way, I can now get back on topic by reporting that a total of 9.0 mm of rain fell at Edinburgh Gogarbank during the 24 hours which started at 09:00 UTC yesterday morning and which is now just ending, along with 8.6 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

Under my new system of reporting this data, the totals for this month, this autumn and this spring have been adjusted to fit in with that which means that what I am about to report won't be consistent with what I have reported until now, as a result of that having been done under my old way of doing that.

Anyway and under this new system, this means that for Edinburgh Gogarbank, that takes this month's total so far to 9.2 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 89.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 652.0 mm as at 08:00 UTC (9am this morning, BST).

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that officially takes the total for this month so far to 8.8 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 87.2 mm and the total for this year so far to 591.2 mm as at 08:00 UTC (9am this morning, BST).

Since the start of the current official observation day which started yesterday at 09:00 UTC, a total of 16.8 mm of rain has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank as at 07:00 UTC (8am this morning, BST), along with 19.4 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That makes today, the wettest day of this month so far at both of those stations by quite a considerable margin.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now officially takes this month's total so far to 26.6 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 107.7 mm and the total for this year so far to 669.4 mm as at 07:00 UTC (8am this morning, BST).

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that officially takes the total for this month so far to 29.0 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 107.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 611.4 mm as at 07:00 UTC (8am this morning, BST).

As it is still raining here as I write, those totals even for today, are unlike to be the final totals in the end.

A total of 19.0 mm of rain fell during the 24 hours which ended at 09:00 UTC (10am BST) this morning, at Edinburgh Gogarbank along with 22.8 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

In addition to that, a total of 3.0 mm of rain has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank since the start of the current observation day at 09:00 UTC (10am) as at 19:00 UTC (7pm, BST) this evening, along with 6.0 mm at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, that now officially takes this month's total so far to 31.8 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 112.4 mm and the total for this year so far to 674.6 mm as at 19:00 UTC (8pm this evening, BST).

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, that officially takes the total for this month so far to 38.4 mm, the total for this autumn so far to 116.8 mm and the total for this year so far to 620.8 mm as at 19:00 UTC (8pm this evening, BST).

This is now turning into yet another we month in this part of the world. According to the 1981-2010 averages for both of those stations, October is statistically the wettest month of the year on average.

This means that you would expect this month be the very time when it would be more difficult to actually get a wetter than average month, than during any other month within any given year.

That indeed, is shown by the fact that recent Octobers (and indeed, recent autumns) have generally been much drier than average in this part of the world.

However, we are currently experiencing quite a wet autumn this year and even when I have just said above is taken into consideration, this month is still looking well on course to end up being substantially wetter than average here.

You can tell this web site has seen better days when no one in here had reported on the big rains in the East Anglia area with over 80 mm in Lowestoft. Facebook and Twitter has been full of chatter about it today.
