An entirely new 1000-bed hospital to be built in Wuhan in just 5 days Now there's a 'can-do' attitude!

But it does suggest that the symptoms are more severe than preliminary reports suggested.

The link merely points out that Wuhan is the only Chinese city which has a specialised lab working with SARs type viruses, what a spot of luck.

I'm reminded of the last F & M outbreak which was caused by a research lab swilling stuff down a broken drain.

Indeed  I would not be too quick to dismiss the idea of  some sort of leak from the Lab. The theories of where it started are many and varied and the source could be Bats or Snakes and the local market ,so i will keep an open mind atm.

The key to how this develops is if there is inter population transmission between people who haven’t been to Wuhan.

Hong Kong now raises their threat level.

I wonder when the WHO will declare an international health emergency.

By chance the Chinese have an experimental lab able to *contain* and work with viruses, guess where it is.

I have tried to air a number of epidemiological concepts on this and the other thread - but folks don't seem to have got the point that the whole risk package needs to be considered, the host that catches the disease, the agent that causes the disease, the environmental factors which  determine the means and effectiveness of transmission and any vectors or co-hosts which may be involved. Human-animal interactions may be a significant issue, as you point out.

The Chinese are either over-reacting or showing indication of official panic because the infection figures are actually far worse than they are saying.
Effectively closing down several cities because of something like a nasty flu?

Well worth a read. Dr M - thanks. That's the kind of development work going on behind the scenes in such research labs. They will know more than anyone the nature of the risks involved and the possible consequences of an accident or error. I've never worked with this kind of "heavy duty" pathogen, but I know folks who have and have been to a couple of active labs. Important stuff.
