86mph recorded Manchester (weatheronline)
The worst is over here now but the area has serious flooding and debris everywhere. No way out of Ilkley apart from over the moors and through raging streams

In the hour to 12pm there was a gust of 91mph at Needles Old Battery (146kph)

Peak gust here 66mph so far, but largely 50mph-55mph most of the time.

Had the broken squall that produced a lot of lightning from Salisbury to Reading. Nothing here of course! So near yet so far.

The intermittent nature of the line made for very turbulent winds, a few very brief gusts to near 60 mph but otherwise unremarkable. Slight damage to a couple of fence panels.

Remains to be seen whether a more organised squall hits later. In the meantime, a lengthy spell of gusts reaching 40-50 mph looks on the cards.

Watching the radar, it broke up and broadened just west of Winchester. It did produce the highest gust and mean speed I've yet measured on my WS, at 50 mph and 28mph respectively, and we're sheltered by nearby hills to the SW, so that's pretty lively.

Back to the weather, it is blustery and damp but not really that exceptional with 1.4 mm of rain. I would say a more standard very windy day so far but I suspect those living at them thar hills are copping it more and the squally stuff are all still to my west (actually, one such linear feature did try to move onto Kent an hour ago but fizzled out before it got here). 

EDIT: Looking out my back window, I can see "water devils" being whipped up inside the inner harbour by winds coming straight in from the Channel and funneling over the harbour wall so it seems to be a lot worse out at sea.

Odium (local to me)  has reached 65 MPH  (and  within the range that was forecasted). - that's not  run of the mill   for an inland Southern  site.  The other factor is the duration of the event.

It's calmed down a fair bit here but at one point this morning it was very impressive with torrential rain driven almost horizontally down the street.


I'm currently watching the river levels at Otley slightly anxiously as I might need to go and rescue my Mum. She's already had the severe telephone warning and it's not due to peak until around 5pm

Hard to pin down the detail though. If you look at the Manchester peak wind gust it has been 35-53mph for most 0.5 hour reporting intervals. It was only during the squall thunderstorm that it got 86mph.  Difficult to predict whether that would happen or not.


 


Peak gust here 66mph so far, but largely 50mph-55mph most of the time.

I would say that is subjective. It's certainly not backed by TWO site usage stats. Things could taper off this afternoon but at the moment it looks like today will be one of the busiest winter days ever on the site.

I agree, gusts round here have been 40-50mph. I'd say last night at points was probably worse. Longeviity is probably the difference here today and the intensity of the squall line adding to flooding issues, but 70mph gusts weren't anywhere to be seen here.
