A total of 4.4 mm of precipitation has fallen at Edinburgh Gogarbank since 9am this morning, along with 6.4 mm at the botanics in Edinburgh as at 9pm this evening with most of that falling as sleet and wet snow.

For Edinburgh Gogarbank, this brings the total for this month to 155.4 mm, the total for this winter to 300.6 mm and the total for this year to 231.0 mm as at 9pm this evening.

For the botanic gardens in Edinburgh, this brings the total for this month to 128.8 mm, the total for this winter to 245.4 mm and the total for this year to 196.4 mm as at 9pm this evening.

Despite the first two months of this winter having not much more than average rainfall in this part of the world with January even being very slightly drier than average at Edinburgh Gogarbank, there has now been an average of more than 100 mm of rain per month during this winter at Edinburgh Gogarbank, as a result of what has happened during this month.

This just goes to show how exceptionally wet this month has been here, as well as the impacts on the outcome of an entire season which just one exceptionally wet month on its own can have on that.

The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Feb's on 126.2 mm here, 217% of the whole-month LTA, top 5% of years since 1957, second only to 2014 (179.5 mm).

Jan-Feb is on 228.8 mm, 170% of the LTA.

Dec-Feb 369.9 mm, 160% of the LTA, top 5% of years since 1957, behind 2013-2014 (595.0 mm) and 1989-1990 (441.3 mm).

2013-14 was so far ahead of any of the others, it's ridiculous!

...and yet - the flooding in these parts peaked at similar levels about a week ago to the highest levels of that winter. This being despite similar amounts of rainfall during the preceding few seasons. Intriguing!

Staggering those figures as February is generally the "drier" of the winter months.

There were about 88 wetter months for this region than the old February record

At the moment, there are now just 16 wetter months. Incredible.

I thought it might be difficult to compare February’s, this year being a leap year, but already it’s up there without the extra day.  Those other 16 wetter months will no doubt have also had 30 or 31 days, which makes it even more remarkable.
