Anyhow, I don't see why people think the WHO should be above criticism - it is the lead international authority in these situations, it has been criticised in the past for over-reacting and in my opinion at least, it has over compensated this time and has not been sufficiently strict. To recap what I see - late to call a PHEIC, not advising travel restrictions at an early enough stage, not advising against tourism and cruises in the region at an early stage and being reluctant to declare a pandemic when there self evidently is one. The bottom line is that the contagion has not been contained.


I shall leave it there, except to say that there will be an inevitable inquest following this affair with new recommendations for the future.

In Hokkaido Prefecture, which has seen the largest number of coronavirus cases in Japan, the governor had already announced a closure of all schools until March 4. That left one hospital closing doors to patients without reservations on Friday because about a fifth of its nurses were unable to work while their children were out of school.

The odd thing about the new Coronavirus to me is that the symptoms in many people seem less severe than those caused by ordinary flu. However, in a small percentage of cases it is severe and kills the host. To a non-expert like me it almost seems akin to a turbocharged "super" cold rather than a strain of the flu.

The idea would be be to greatly reduce general travel, rather than stop all imports.
Being rational.

Look at what China has had to do to  (almost) contain it.
There might be some success with less extreme restrictions if action is taken sooner.

Although I don't expect mass fatalities in the UK and I've not turned my heating up to sauna levels, I am now starting to take precautions because I am slightly concerned by the threat of significant disruption to supply and logistical chains:



  1. I am ordering bulk deliveries of my asthma medication privately so that I have a stockpile

  2. I am reactivating my 'Operation Yellowhammer' by stocking up on non-perishable foodstuffs

  3. Once again, I am stockpiling a bit of petrol (which goes off after about six months). I still have plenty of diesel from the no deal debacle


I suspect that the worst we will see is a bit of panic buying and the associated unpleasantness in the supermarkets but one cannot complete rule out a partial breakdown in the Just In Time extravaganza.
