America is just so weird. A corporatocracy crossed with a theocracy.

One place to watch closely will be Africa. There is a theory that cases may level off during the Northern hemisphere summer on the basis that the virus does not spread so easily at higher temperatures. Africa obviously has higher temperatures all year round so the spread of cases there will be a good test for this theory. If the theory is correct, we might just contain the virus in  Britain and Ireland until the summer.

I also think that air conditioning may negate the benefits of sunshine and warmth - people can still spread the virus when indoors; and places like Singapore and the Middle East have ubiquitous AC. The UK certainly doesn't. So maybe there is some hope.

In any case, I'm glad it's now March and not November.

That’s interesting. Outside of China, what measures have slowed down the spread of the virus?

Someone sneezed on the packed tube carriage this morning. They were reading their paper, but they aerosoled everywhere.

It was filthy, people have no respect. I suspect in time London will become a hotbed for this virus sadly if people keep doing that in enclosed public spaces.

Finally some good news. This is from the BBC

Italy reports drop in new coronavirus cases

Italy has reported its first dip in new cases from the coronavirus outbreak.

On Monday, Italian authorities said there were 258 new cases of the virus - a 16% increase on the previous day.

The head of Italy's Civil Protection Authority, Angelo Borrelli, said the figure was "comforting" after new cases spiked by 50% on Sunday.

Monday's increase brings the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 1,835. Of those, 52 have died and 149 have recovered.

Half of all confirmed coronavirus patients in the country have mild conditions and have been told to stay at home, according to Italian news agency Ansa.

Some 40% are in hospital and only 10% are in intensive care, Ansa reported.

Italy has the third highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the world, behind South Korea and China, where the illness originated in the city of Wuhan.

Italian authorities have responded with travel restrictions in the north of the country, with a number of towns in Lombardy in lockdown.

Coronavirus battle plan revealed by UK government

The Army is on standby and police will be told to stop investigating lower level crime, the Government's coronavirus "battle plan" has revealed.

The Government’s 28-page coronavirus action plan also warns that workplaces could have a fifth of their staff off sick at any one time, meaning that essential public services such as the NHS and police would have to focus on core services only.

The Government’s 28-page coronavirus action plan warns of:

  1. Coronavirus being compared to Spanish Flu

  2. Outbreaks could come in multiple waves

  3. Emergency services will concentrate on serious crime

  4. Tax mitigation for businesses

  5. Expected increase in deaths

  6. Stockpiling strategy for medical supplies

  7. School closures and working from home

  8. Non-urgent NHS care to be delayed

  9. Police told to stop investigating lower-level crime

  10. The Army on standby

As an antidote to panic, the BBC's medical correspondent (Fergus Walsh? I wasn't listening hard enough) has just pointed out that the 'reasonable worst case scenario' from the Govt Chief Medial Officer for swine flu, a few years back, was 65.000 deaths. in the event there were under 500.

The conclusion to draw is "No situation is ever as good or as bad as you think it is".
